Fantastic, fabulous, a stupendously good Syrah that shows off Bien Nacido at its most perfect. Totally dry, with sturdy but ultra-refined tannins, it displays massive waves of blackberries, black currants, blueberries, smoked meat, violets, sandalwood and black pepper. Just beginning to find its groove, it should develop for many years.

A massively rich, ripe, flamboyant wine. Huge in blackberries, cassis, smoked meat, leather, cocoa, pepper and sandalwood flavors that go on and on. Full-bodied, powerful, a hedonist’s Syrah. Near perfect balance of tannins and acids, with integrated oak. Dramatic and ageable, it should develop over the next six years.

Qupé 2008 Sawyer Lindquist Vineyard Syrah (Edna Valley)

This section of San Luis Obispo County is not known as Syrah country, but judging by this beautiful bottling, it should be. The wine is bone dry, firm in tannins and bright in acidity, with a cool-climate white pepper note riding over intense black cherry, roasted meat and cola flavors, made more complicated by oak. Delicious and compelling and best now.

Smells young, with plum, currant, and earth aromas. Tastes young and fresh and bold, very extracted and rich. Quite tannic now, but has the stuffing for the long haul. Not to be confused with Qupé’s Bien Nacido Reserve.

Qupé 2009 Sawyer Lindquist Vineyard Syrah (Edna Valley)

Very ripe, showing rich, pure varietal flavors of blackberries, cherries, ground pepper, grilled meat, sweet sandalwood and spices. One hundred percent Syrah, it’s balanced with great acidity. Really smooth and delicious, and a crowd pleaser. Could develop over the next 4–5 years.
