R & B Cellars 1997 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

Impressive and elegant, this one leans American with its R & B name and packaging, but is rather French in profile. The black-cherry fruit is offset by a lead-pencil element reminiscent of some top Bordeaux chateaus. Angular and fairly crisp, it shows coffee accents and a fairly long finish. If it adds some weight with age, it will drink above the present rating.

R & B Cellars 2008 Pizzicato Petite Sirah (Napa Valley)

This fine wine shows how well the variety grows in Napa Valley. The tannins are lovely and refined, acidity is perfect, the finish is dry, the alcohol isn’t too high, and the fruit flavors are ripe and accessible. That resolves most of the problems that plague Petite Sirah. Should develop bottle complexities over the next several years.

Robust and country-style, this is a nice wine for barbecue and beef stews. Very dry and tannic, it shows harmonious flavors of blackberries, currants and wild nettles. Buy this young wine for your full-bodied house red.

A very nice Cab Franc that shows how well this variety can do in the Sierra Foothills. It’s quite soft and light in body, making it a wine for early drinking. But it offers waves of cherries, anisettte liqueur, cocoa, pepper and mint flavors that are delicious.

A nice dry white with some real complexity. The RRV fruit was stainless steel fermented; the Napa grapes were barrel fermented. The result? Scads of lemongrass, figs and melons, in a creamy texture.

A little light-bodied for a Zinfandel, with the silky texture of Pinot Noir, but the flavors are strong and ripe. The raspberries and cherries have a roasted edge, like pie filling, while the finish is somewhat sweet.
