Raymond

While Raymond Winery was not established until 1970, its origins date back to 1933 when Roy Raymond found his way to the Napa Valley. In 1936 he married Martha Jane Beringer and proceeded to work at her family’s Beringer Vineyards for the next 34 years. After gaining valuable experience at Beringer, Roy and his sons Walter and Roy Jr. ventured on their own to build Raymond Vineyards from the ground up. Their first crush was in 1974 where the family was involved in every step of the process from farming to sales. Raymond wines are recognized for their top tier Cabernet Sauvignon according to our Raymond reviews. However they also produce wines from other popular Napa grape varieties including Chardonnay, Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc. While it is their Generations and single vineyard Cabernets that consistently top our Raymond ratings, they also produce an entry level line called the R Collection for the value minded consumer.

Raymond 2002 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon (St. Helena)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $50
From a small estate vineyard comes this lush, complex and delicious 100% Cabernet. It’s concentrated in cassis flavors enhanced with oak, and displays classic Napa tannins that are rich, ripely sweet and ageworthy. It’s a joy to see veteran Raymond continue to produce great Cabernet in Napa Valley.  — S.H.  (7/1/2006)

Raymond 2009 Generations Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $115
A flashy wine—dry and rich and dense— that manages to be drinkable now, yet also ageable. The flamboyant black currant, chocolate, spice and oak flavors are delicious, and while the tannins are pretty strong, they’re finely ground, giving the wine a nice grittiness. This blend will age well through 2020.  — S.H.  (5/1/2013)

Raymond 2008 District Collection Cabernet Sauvignon (Oakville)

  1. $75
A superb wine, showing real Oakville character. It’s bone dry, rich and complex in tannin structure, with wonderfully ripe blackberry and cassis flavors. Yet there’s a minerality that anchors the wine, and the finish is long, smooth and spicy. Just delicious now, and should hold over the next six years.  — S.H.  (6/1/2012)

Raymond 2008 Generations Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

  1. $100
So rich and ripe in fruit, you almost don’t notice that it’s also a complicated and layered wine in structure. Blackberry marmalade, cassis and cocoa flavors are balanced despite hefty alcohol. An extraordinarily delicious wine, but it’s meant to be enjoyed in its youth. Drink up by 2016.  — S.H.  (6/1/2012)

Raymond 2009 District Collection Cabernet Sauvignon (St. Helena)

An ambitious Cabernet that’s part of Raymond’s program of highlighting individual appellations within Napa Valley. This wine is delicious, exhibiting rich, deep flavors of black currants with tasteful accents of oak. While it’s fine to drink now, the tannins and long finish suggest up to eight years in the cellar will be beneficial.  — S.H.  (5/1/2013)

Raymond 2005 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $35
Other wineries come and go. Raymond remains, offering solid Napa Valley Cab at a fair price. The ’05 Reserve calls to mind the very fine 2000, but actually costs less. It’s a dry, elegantly structured wine, rich in sweet fine tannins, and offering up complex, delicious flavors of freshly picked ripe blackberries, spicy cassis, baked cherry pie and smoky oak. Drink…  — S.H.  (6/1/2008)

Raymond 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon (Oakville)

  1. $60
Very rich and ripe. Earns its high score for the interesting, complex presentation, like a high-production play, with classic blackberry, cassis and new oak flavors, wrapped into refined tannins. Dramatic and impressive, but not an ager, so drink up.  — S.H.  (8/1/2011)

Raymond 2006 Generations Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

  1. $85
A gorgeous Cabernet, sweetly soft and generous, offering delicious flavors. With an overlay of smoky, vanilla-scented oak, it has a core of blackberries, cherries, cassis and spices. Feels vital and flashy. Drink over the next four years.  — S.H.  (8/1/2011)
