Red Rover 2005 Merlot (Central Coast)

Here’s a new entry in the animal-themed, labels gone wild varietal sweepstakes. For eight bucks, you get a big gulp of cherries and blackberries, in a softly textured, dry package. It’s a great deal.

Red Rover 2003 Petite Sirah (Central Coast)
Best Buy
Price
$9
A nice wine, full-bodied and gutsy in the style of Pet, with crunchy tannins and upfront currant, coffee, chocolate and herb flavors. There’s some raisiny overripeness, but those babybacks won’t care.

A little watery, but nicely dry and quite tart, which gets those tastebuds watering. Shows flavors of lemons and limes, with a hint of pear.

Red Rover 2007 Chardonnay (Sierra Foothills)

Pretty good, although it’s drying out. The pineapple and pear flavors are disappearing, replaced by herbs and vegetables. Drink quickly.

Red Rover 2005 Chardonnay (Central Coast)
Price
$8
Good price for an everyday Chard with quite a bit of ripe fruit and what tastes like spicy oak. Finishes clean and long.

Red Rover 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon (Central Coast)
Price
$8
Red Rover, a brand from Stevenot, has done a bang-up job with inexpensive varietals. This Cab is a good expression of a rustic, country-style wine that just needs some decent food and a good setting to please. With berries and cherries, it’s dry, and has a nice spiciness.
