Remhoogte 2003 Bonne Nouvelle Red (Stellenbosch)

  1. $45
The second vintage from this joint venture between Remhoogte owner Murray Boustred and new partner Michel Rolland. This blend includes Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinotage. It is an impressively perfumed wine that gets away from the juicy Pinotage flavors and goes for a densely packed, woody taste, with great black plum flavors.  — R.V.  (11/1/2006)

Remhoogte 2003 Estate Wine Red (Simonsberg-Stellenbosch)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $28
The estate wine from Remhoogte in which Michel Rolland is both consultant and partner. This Bordeaux Blend is serious stuff with dry tannins that promise good aging. There is some Pinotage in the blend, but it is hardly noticeable; the main flavors come from the textured cassis of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.  — R.V.  (11/1/2006)

Remhoogte 2003 Bonne Nouvelle Red (Stellenbosch)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $34
Cinnamon, plum, blackberry and cedar aromas start this rich but poised red. Savory flavors of black fruit and spice are accompanied by fine, chalky tannins. Pair with lamb, richer fare.  — S.K.  (8/1/2010)

Remhoogte 2007 Reserve Merlot (Simonsberg-Stellenbosch)

  1. $33
Cedar plank-grilled meat and herbal accents jazz up the heady black fruit core of this wine. Rich and dark, flavors of black berry, plum flesh, cigar box, licorice and pepper dance in the mouth and stay through the solid finish. Fine but firm tannins provide structure and texture, and the wine, though delicious now, should age nicely through 2014.  — L.B.  (3/1/2012)

Remhoogte 2002 Bonne Nouvelle Red (Stellenbosch)

  1. $40
This is the first vintage of the joint venture between Remhoogte owner Murray Boustred and consultant Michel Rolland. And it certainly started with a bang, exploding in the mouth with intense packed fruit flavors, big spicy wood and juicy, ripe tannins.  — R.V.  (11/1/2006)

Remhoogte 2009 Pinotage (Simonsberg-Stellenbosch)

  1. $19
Fresh spearmint sprig permeates the bouquet and palate, lifting up the intense black cherry and raspberry fruit flavors. Medium weight, with a nice juicy liveliness that transitions nicely into the long finish infused with sweet spice.  — L.B.  (11/1/2011)

Remhoogte 2008 Aigle Noir Red (Simonsberg-Stellenbosch)

  1. $20
Though the nose is a bit muted, assertive juicy black plum and muddled mulberry unfold in the round mouth. Firm tannins follow through to the dry, waxy finish. Try in another year or two, or give it a good long decant before drinking now.  — L.B.  (6/1/2011)

Remhoogte 2000 Cabernet Sauvignon (Stellenbosch)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $22
This estate-bottled Cabernet's dark fruit tries to project but is dominated, as in too many South African reds, by untamed notes of earth, animal and iodine. Whether from soil, vines, or winemaking practices, these elements lack appeal and render the wine out-of-balance when present to this extent. Closes long and very dry, with a bitter note.  — M.M.  (3/1/2004)
