The estate wine from Remhoogte in which Michel Rolland is both consultant and partner. This Bordeaux Blend is serious stuff with dry tannins that promise good aging. There is some Pinotage in the blend, but it is hardly noticeable; the main flavors come from the textured cassis of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.

A gorgeous, single-vineyard Chenin Blanc that shows great complexity and balance. The bouquet is initially seductive and oaky, but it subsides with time to integrate with the ripe melon, mango and yellow peach scents. Developed and slightly honeyed, the palate is lush and round. Remhoogte 2007 Reserve Merlot (Simonsberg-Stellenbosch)

Cedar plank-grilled meat and herbal accents jazz up the heady black fruit core of this wine. Rich and dark, flavors of black berry, plum flesh, cigar box, licorice and pepper dance in the mouth and stay through the solid finish. Fine but firm tannins provide structure and texture, and the wine, though delicious now, should age nicely through 2014.

This dense, full-flavored Chenin exudes ripe fruit aromas and flavors of red apple flesh, wood-grilled peach and sweet orange oil. The mouthfeel is round but not fat, with good acidity and a spicy but clean finish. Drink now–2014.

Fresh spearmint sprig permeates the bouquet and palate, lifting up the intense black cherry and raspberry fruit flavors. Medium weight, with a nice juicy liveliness that transitions nicely into the long finish infused with sweet spice.

Remhoogte 2008 Aigle Noir Red (Simonsberg-Stellenbosch)

Though the nose is a bit muted, assertive juicy black plum and muddled mulberry unfold in the round mouth. Firm tannins follow through to the dry, waxy finish. Try in another year or two, or give it a good long decant before drinking now.
