Some Barbier wines, depending on when you catch them, are fresh, pleasant and overdeliver. Others are dull and dead. This one falls into the first category with its melon, apple and Asian pear aromas and flavors. It’s lithe, light in body and clean. Good as it gets for $6.

Still not sure what the secret is behind this nonvintage white blend, but my sample was fresh, floral, soft and welcoming. It showed a fleshy but healthy feel and pineapple and green plum flavors. Fresh and sweet on the finish, with enough acidity to work with food. As good as this wine gets.

This simple summer sipper is clean, fresh and grassy, with aromas of apple and green melon. Surprisingly mouthfilling for something so easygoing, but still packed with melon and citrus flavors. Fresh and zesty, and just right for patio parties. Imported by Freixenet USA.

Aromas of grapefruit and slate are clean. The palate runs zesty to the point of being spritzy, with pink grapefruit and apricot flavors. Tangy and juicy, and totally uncomplicated. A picnic wine in every sense. Imported by Freixenet USA.

If you catch this salmon-colored sweety when it's fresh and chilled, it will fit the bill with ease. It offers spicy gumdrop aromas offset by strawberry, while the flavor profile centers around peach, cherry and melon. Has residual sugar but also enough natural fruit and acids to handle it.

Despite an opening that features some vinegary sharpness and mulch, there’s also decent berry fruit notes and milk chocolate sweetness to the nose. Feels about as you’d expect, which means it’s zesty and lean, with cherry, plum and herbal flavors. Juicy and minty on the finish.

Bulky and simple on the bouquet, with some plum and blackberry. Flavors of cherry, plum and berry are standard fare and clean, while the mouthfeel is a touch racy as it toes the line of sharpness. A bit of chocolaty oak adds sweetness to the zesty, acid-strong finish.

Despite showing forced sweetness, this Catalonian blend always delivers in its price category. There’s dusty lemon-lime and powdered sugar aromas and flavors along with papaya and green melon. It’s never going to be a sophisticated white but it does get the job done for $5.99. And because of that there will always be a market for René Barbier Mediterranean White.
