Rioja Vega 2005 Reserva Red (Rioja)

Molasses, intriguing spice, cola and berry aromas are good and honest. The mouthfeel on this wine is zesty due to 25% Graciano in the blend, and overall it’s a snappy number with sweet and sour flavors, toasty nuances and a long finish. Drink now through 2014.  — M.S.  (10/1/2011)

Rioja Vega 2001 Reserva Red (Rioja)

  1. $19
Standard but nicely done. This is a solid representative of 2001, and it’s showing nice, mature cherry flavors along with integrated tannins, vanilla and an easygoing plumpness. Drink now.  — M.S.  (11/1/2007)

Rioja Vega 2008 9 Barricas Red (Rioja)

  1. $70
Piercing on the nose, with hickory smoke, char and exotic boysenberry aromas. Feels high in acid and low in density, with a tight and biting mouthfeel along with heavily oaked flavors of berry fruit, vanilla, butter and coconut. Very fresh and colorful, but lacking in stuffing and complexity.  — M.S.  (2/1/2012)

Rioja Vega 2004 Reserva Red (Rioja)

  1. $21
Good overall, but with a few holes. The nose features dried red fruits, mint, dillweed and spice, while the medium-bodied palate has a slight green underbelly along with plum and raspberry on the edges. Smacks the cheeks on the finish, and then coasts away with a dry, herbal essence.  — M.S.  (11/1/2009)

Rioja Vega 2006 Tempranillo (Rioja)

  1. $8
Strawberry, tea and sandalwood aromas make for an interesting, unusual bouquet. This is a fresh, young wine that shouldn’t solicit much contemplation, but will register positively due to its light, smooth feel. It’s medium in depth, with airy finishing notes of mushroom and cherry.  — M.S.  (6/1/2008)

Rioja Vega 2000 Red (Rioja)

Forward, expressive plum and raspberry fruit would leap from the glass were it not reigned in by a healthy dose of oak. Brambly, tomatoey—even Bourbonlike—accents waft from the nose. Medium-bodied, this Tempranillo, Garnacha and Mazuelo blend is a natural match for tapas, paella, or gambas al ajillo. Best Buy. —D.M.  — D.T.  (4/1/2003)

Rioja Vega 2006 Reserva Red (Rioja)

  1. $38
Charred and burnt-smelling, and those aromas are overpowering although not necessarily bad. Feels big and tannic, with bite to go with dark flavors of bitter coffee, roasted black plum and wild berry. The charred, burnt character that controls the bouquet returns with a fury on the finish.  — M.S.  (5/1/2012)

Rioja Vega 2006 Crianza Red (Rioja)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $12
Lightly stemmy and brambly, with lean red fruit aromas, a touch of saline and red licorice candy. The palate is lean and sort of scratchy, while the flavors are suggestive of red apple skins and red plum. Tight on the finish; similar is some ways to a simple Chianti.  — M.S.  (8/1/2010)
