Rizzi 2008 Pajoré Nebbiolo (Barbaresco)
Online Exclusive
Price
$57
Very distinctive and unique in terms of its aromatic delivery, this beautiful Barbaresco boasts complex layers of licorice, root beer and white cherry that help support a lively vertical lift. A light ruby appearance is followed by tight astringency and crushed black pepper. Pajoré plays the elegance card very well.

Rizzi 2000 Boito Nebbiolo (Barbaresco)
Price
$45
This plump, moderately rich wine impressed with its complex scents of leather, asphalt and fennel that accent plum and cherry fruit. Turns chewy and tarry on the finish, suggesting decent longevity; try after 2008.

Rizzi 2005 Boito Nebbiolo (Barbaresco)
Price
$48
This vineyard-designate Barbaresco delivers evolved notes of exotic spice, black fruit, tar, asphalt and black peppercorn. That’s not to say it’s all brawn and muscle: delicate aromas of white cherry and violets are laced throughout. It’s a bit thorny and raw in the mouth and needs a few more years to find balance. Drink 2012–2018.

Rizzi 2005 Nervo Fondetta Nebbiolo (Barbaresco)
Price
$48
Slightly sweet aromas of Christmas spice, ginger, almond paste, cherry and plum cake characterize this luminous Barbaresco from Rizzi. The mouthfeel, however, is completely dedicated to elegance: it is compact and tight with bright acidity and long staying power. Drink after 2010.

Pajoré is a classic expression of Barbaresco with clean and elegant lines and a wonderfully vertical and intense delivery of aromas. The bouquet is generous with tones of forest berry, root beer, tar, licorice, dried pipe tobacco and a touch of bitter almond on the close.
