Robert Ramsay 2007 Syrah (Horse Heaven Hills)

  • Editors' Choice
  • Online Exclusive
  1. $20
Citrus oil, cherries, clean earth and sweet coffee notes configure this well-crafted Syrah from McKinley Springs vineyard grapes. More flavors emerge with time—black olive and pepper, dried herbs and sandalwood. Bright and assertive, with precisely defined tannins.  — P.G.  (11/1/2011)

Robert Ramsay 2008 Upland Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon (Yakima Valley)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $38
The Upland Vineyards are in the heart of the Snipes Mountain AVA, a subregion of the listed Yakima Valley. This almost (98%) pure Cabernet has a peppery note, speckled through bright flavors of berries and black currant. There’s a suggestion of moist earth, but the fruit is really the star here.  — P.G.  (11/1/2011)

Robert Ramsay 2007 Upland Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon (Yakima Valley)

  1. $38
A solid, earthy, dusty, lightly leathery Cabernet Sauvignon. Though perhaps not technically perfect, it captures the palate imagination with texture and detail, and a light touch which keeps the alcohol around 14% and the tannins proportionate. No massive new oak here either, though the (virtually impossible to read) back label notes that it was made in 100% French…  — P.G.  (11/1/2010)

Robert Ramsay 2006 Syrah (Horse Heaven Hills)

  1. $35
This looks appealing right as it’s being poured from the bottle. Deep blue/purple, it flows like honey, with a suppleness that suggests good things to come. Sniff—it’s loaded with spicy, herbal, lightly funky Syrah character. Swirl—it gathers power and strength. Sip—this is Washington Syrah alright, with plenty of composty herb and funk, truffle and herb, but…  — P.G.  (11/1/2010)

Robert Ramsay 2007 McKinley Springs Mourvèdre (Horse Heaven Hills)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $42
This is pure Mourvèdre from the McKinley Springs vineyard, a still-rare varietal in Washington with intriguing prospects. Without its Rhône cousins in the mix, Mourvèdre turns almost Bordeaux-like, firm and lightly herbal, with pretty black cherry fruit dominant. This is well-made, balanced and fresh, though the grapes are too young to have acquired the nuances of…  — P.G.  (11/1/2010)

Robert Ramsay 2008 McKinley Springs Mourvèdre (Horse Heaven Hills)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $42
At first whiff a little high-toned and sharp, this pure, single-vineyard Mourvèdre smoothes out in the mouth. The fruit has young, light flavors of strawberry and raspberry, with a slight suggestion of truffle. Bright acidity hides the influence of the (40%) new oak aging.  — P.G.  (11/1/2011)
