Rocca 2001 Syrah (Yountville)

  1. $38
Quite firm and tannic in its youth, but shows promise in the overall balance, and the core of rich, ripe cherry and blackberry fruit. There’s a meaty, leathery edge that meshes well with oak on the finish. Should develop through 2008.  — S.H.  (6/1/2005)

Rocca 2004 Bad Boy Red (Yountville)

  1. $29
The winery doesn’t disclose the varietals in this wine, but it tastes like Cabernet and shows a fine, southern Napa structure. There’s a cut of juicy acidity and dusting of thyme to the complex cassis, mocha and licorice flavors.  — S.H.  (4/1/2007)

Rocca 1999 Syrah (Yountville)

  1. $38
Decant this puppy; it’s young and backward and will improve considerably with airing. Then, pretty aromas open up of blackberries, white pepper, raw meat and smoky oak. In the mouth, the wine is rich and tannic, with a solid core of blackberry fruit.  — S.H.  (10/1/2003)

Rocca 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon (Yountville)

  1. $50
A fine Cab that shows off its pedigree in the ripe, exuberant cherry and blackberry flavors and the smooth, sweet tannins. Oak plays a large part in this wine’s creamy sweetness. Some dusty tannins show up in the finish. Drinkable now.  — S.H.  (6/1/2005)

Rocca 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon (Yountville)

  1. $55
What’s so nice about this Cab is its balance and delicacy, without the heaviness that can mar a more alcoholic wine. It shows polished flavors of cherries, blackberries, cola and cedar, with a long, fine finish of cassis liqueur. Really an elegant sipper, this wine is best now and for a couple years.  — S.H.  (12/31/2007)

Rocca 2003 Syrah (Yountville)

  1. $42
This wine has been variable, but the ’03 shows lots of varietal distinction. It opens with a burst of white pepper-infused blackberry, chocolate, licorice and oak aromas, and turns rich and soft in the mouth, with similar flavors. The smooth tannins make this immediately drinkable.  — S.H.  (12/31/2007)

Rocca 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon (Yountville)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $60
An interesting wine. It comes from a southerly part of Napa Valley many consider too cool for fine Cab. But this was a warm vintage. The result is very ripe fruit, wrapped in robust, hard tannins that make the wine too young to drink now. The blackberry, currant, cherry and new oak flavors are delicious, but this Cab needs at least through 2008 to come into its own…  — S.H.  (4/1/2008)

Rocca 2006 Collinetta Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

  1. $85
A bit leaner and more herbal than many of its Napa cousins, the ’06 Rocca nonetheless is an elegantly constructed wine, reminiscent of a good, minor Bordeaux. The blackberry fruit combines with oak to provide richness and texture.  — S.H.  (9/1/2010)
