Rocca di Montegrossi 1999 Geremia Sangiovese (Toscana)
Price
$35
Round and minty up front, with stylish dark-fruit aromas and a touch of char. An intense wine with deep cherry, toast and coffee flavors. The finish is ripe and moderately tannic, with herb notes and a lot of bitter chocolate. Sangiovese with 7% Merlot. Should age nicely through 2010.

Rocca di Montegrossi 1997 San Marcellino Sangiovese (Chianti Classico)
Price
$30
A solid package, offering cherry, coffee and chocolate aromas, a substantial but smooth mouthfeel and cherry flavors with licorice accents. The long finish displays hearty tannins along with licorice and black-plum flavors. This can use a few years to polish its rusticity.

Rocca di Montegrossi 1998 Sangiovese (Chianti Classico)
Price
$18
This full bodied, weighty wine displays a bouquet of dark cherries, cinnamon-clove spice and toast. Quite dry on the palate, it has dense fruit, but fairly high acidity and plenty of oak. The finish shows tart cherry flavors and big, fairly angular tannins. Cellar for three years.

Rocca di Montegrossi 2003 Sangiovese (Chianti Classico)
Online Exclusive
Toasted wood notes are wide and penetrating and leave a heavy mark of espresso, spice and leather. There are also fruity notes, albeit very ripe ones, of red cherry and strawberry preserves. Made in Gaiole in Chianti, the wine has good intensity and dusty tannins.

Rocca di Montegrossi 2001 Sangiovese (Chianti Classico)
Price
$23
The bouquet is good, with aromas of rubber, spice, leather and plum-style fruit. Seems a little grippy and starchy on the palate, where big tannins take over and mask the rest of the show. Ultra firm and tannic on the back end, where more grab than flavor is on display.

Rocca di Montegrossi 1999 Vigneto San Marcellino Sangiovese (Chianti Classico)
Price
$40
Dark and roasted on the nose, but short on the palate. The tannins are green and rock-hard, yet there’s some meatiness and plum-based darkness to the flavors. In the end, however, it’s a touch rough and unyielding.
