Rodney Strong 2005 Reserve Chardonnay (Sonoma County)

  1. $30
This is one of the biggest, richest Chardonnays that Rodney Strong has ever produced, and no wonder, as longtime winemaker Rick Sayre was assisted by David Ramey as a consultant. The wine has Ramey-esque proportions, gigantic in fleshy tropical fruit, caramel, vanilla cream, butterscotch and meringue flavors. It’s so softly decadent, it’s almost better as a…  — S.H.  (12/31/2007)

Rodney Strong 2002 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon (Sonoma County)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $40
The winery’s reserve Cab has been variable over the years, but this ’02 is really a very good wine that will reward cellaring. It’s luscious now, but such are the tannins, the dry balance, and the freshness of the blackberry flavors, that time in the bottle is bound to reward. Should open by the end of 2007, and drink well for the next five years.  — S.H.  (5/1/2007)

Rodney Strong 2008 Reserve Pinot Noir (Russian River Valley)

  1. $40
Made in an immediately appealing style, this Pinot is soft and lush and vast in fruit and oak richness. It floods the palate with cherry and raspberry pie filling, vanilla, cinnamon and sandalwood flavors, and the texture is silky and elegant.  — S.H.  (11/1/2010)

Rodney Strong 2009 Reserve Pinot Noir (Russian River Valley)

  1. $40
A lovely restaurant-style Pinot Noir, showing lots of class and elegance, yet with enough modesty to step aside and let the food star. Dry and silky, it shows raspberry, cherry, red currant and cola flavors, accented with sweet, smoky oak. Suggested pairings include steak, lamb chops and grilled ahi tuna.  — S.H.  (5/1/2012)

Rodney Strong 2000 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon (Sonoma County)

  1. $40
Considerably more Cabernet-oriented than Rod Strong’s 2000 Meritage, this wine shows pronounced cassis and black currant flavors, as well as some pretty powerful tannins. It’s also very oaky. Seems best to let it mellow for a good five years.  — S.H.  (10/1/2005)

Rodney Strong 1999 Reserve Pinot Noir (Russian River Valley)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $30
Wears a toasty mantle of smoke, meat and burnt marshmallow. Yet we found the dark cherry and tart plum fruit core to be strong enough to weather its oak. The wine’s polished rusticity has great appeal, with earthy, dusty tannins, pepper and cola accents. Drink now through 2007. Editors’ Choice.  — W.E.  (10/1/2002)

Rodney Strong 2005 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon (Alexander Valley)

  1. $50
Scores high on the deliciousness factor, a softly gentle, rich wine with flavors of blackberry jam, cassis, cedar and fine, dried herbs. The winery is trying very hard to boost the quality of their Reserve Cab. The challenge is to build in those extra layers of complexity and depth.  — S.H.  (12/15/2008)
