Rodney Strong

Rodney Strong Winery was the 13th bonded winery in Sonoma County back in 1959 making it one of the pioneers of the region's wine industry. Rodney Strong Vineyards grows and produces wines from grapes grown exclusively in Sonoma County's most revered appellations including Alexander Valley, Russian River Valley, Chalk Hill and Sonoma Coast. In 1989 the Klein Family purchased the winery and it has been family owned and operated ever since. With a long rooted background in California agriculture, their passion for sustainable farming practices, solar power and other green business practices led Rodney Strong to become Sonoma County's first carbon neutral winery. Rodney Strong wines are made from a number of various varietals including Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Their lines range from the affordable and value driven Sonoma County wines, to their Estate Alexander Valley and Russian River Valley wines, all the way up to their premium Reserve wines. They also offer three single vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon selections as well as their Symmetry Bordeaux blend which all tend to earn the highest ratings according to our Rodney Strong ratings. Rodney Strong 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon (Sonoma County)

  1. $17
Good price for a clean, solid Cabernet, properly varietal and easy to drink now. It has pleasant berry, cherry, cola and herb flavors that have some complexity.  — S.H.  (6/1/2012)

Rodney Strong 1997 Estate Bottled Pinot Noir (Russian River Valley)

  1. $16
Unsual nose with caramel, chocolate and cola components. Raspberry, earth and cola flavors and a fairly juicy mouthfeel mark the palate. Finishes with dusty tannins and peppery notes.  — W.E.  (12/15/1999)

Rodney Strong 2008 Estate Vineyards Pinot Noir (Russian River Valley)

  1. $20
Tastes sharp and jammy, a very young wine with fresh flavors of cherries and black raspberries. Gets the Pinot job done at a decent price, and could mellow in the bottle through 2011.  — S.H.  (6/1/2010)

Rodney Strong 1998 Knotty Vines Zinfandel (Northern Sonoma)

  1. $18
This lavishly oaked, opaque Zinfandel sports a dense nose of blackberry with pronounced toasty and menthol shadings. The mouthfeel is full and smooth, there’s dark fruit and plenty of espresso, bitter chocolate and tar on the palate and finish, with tannins to lose on the back end. The wine may open up and the fruit ascend more in a year; lovers of heavy toast can…  — W.E.  (3/1/2001)

Rodney Strong 2000 Chalk Hill Chardonnay (Sonoma County)

  1. $18
The grapes got ripe enough to veer into mangoes and guavas and other tropical fruits, and barrel fermentation adds spicy notes a round, creamy mouthfeel. It’s a classic New World Chard. It’s also basically simple, well-made and clean, but Johnny-one-note, with a touch of citrus acids in the finish. —S.H.  — S.H.  (5/1/2002)

Rodney Strong 1998 Estate Vineyards Merlot (Alexander Valley)

  1. $26
At four-plus years, the tannins are resolved, although far from absent. Acidity is also high. Finally the wine is coming around, with spicy plum and cassis flavors, but it is teetering on the verge of old age already, and has an edge of senility.  — S.H.  (8/1/2003)

Rodney Strong 2001 Chardonnay (Sonoma County)

  1. $14
This is a nice, flavorful wine with lots of peach, pear and apple tastes, and a round, creamy mouthfeel. It’s a bit soft, but offers up lots to like at a gentle price.  — S.H.  (6/1/2003)

Rodney Strong 1999 Symmetry Cabernet Sauvignon (Alexander Valley)

  1. $55
From Rodney Strong, an oaky, ripe wine made in the international Cabernet style. It’s strong and extracted in fruit, and drenched with woody char and vanilla. Some tough tannins lurk throughout.  — S.H.  (11/15/2004)
