Rodney Strong

Rodney Strong Winery was the 13th bonded winery in Sonoma County back in 1959 making it one of the pioneers of the region's wine industry. Rodney Strong Vineyards grows and produces wines from grapes grown exclusively in Sonoma County's most revered appellations including Alexander Valley, Russian River Valley, Chalk Hill and Sonoma Coast. In 1989 the Klein Family purchased the winery and it has been family owned and operated ever since. With a long rooted background in California agriculture, their passion for sustainable farming practices, solar power and other green business practices led Rodney Strong to become Sonoma County's first carbon neutral winery. Rodney Strong wines are made from a number of various varietals including Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Their lines range from the affordable and value driven Sonoma County wines, to their Estate Alexander Valley and Russian River Valley wines, all the way up to their premium Reserve wines. They also offer three single vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon selections as well as their Symmetry Bordeaux blend which all tend to earn the highest ratings according to our Rodney Strong ratings. Rodney Strong 2006 Chalk Hill Estate Vineyards Chardonnay (Chalk Hill)

  1. $20
Sweet, smoky oak dominates this Chard, giving a caramelized, vanilla custard taste to the underlying pineapple fruit. Fans of this style will enjoy it.  — S.H.  (12/31/2008)

Rodney Strong 1998 Alden Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon (Alexander Valley)

  1. $30
Simple and dull, a soft, flat wine lacking vibrancy. The flavors are herbal, tending toward tobacco and sage. But there are some tough tannins that kick in on the finish.  — S.H.  (11/15/2002)

A nice, easy-drinking white wine that appeals for its ripe, fruity flavors and crisp acids. It’s a little on the sweet side, and clean in the finish.  — S.H.  (12/31/2004)

A nice, easy Chard with decent fruit, a coating of oak, and good acidity. Turns a little thin toward the end, though.  — S.H.  (10/1/2005)

Rodney Strong 2005 Estate Chardonnay (Chalk Hill)

  1. $20
Very ripe and oaky, but a little on the obvious side, with flamboyant tropical fruit, honey and buttered toast flavors. Could use greater finesse, subtlety, complexity.  — S.H.  (10/1/2007)

Rodney Strong 2006 Chardonnay (Sonoma County)

  1. $15
Solidly in the winery’s house style, this is a clean, varietally true Chard, dry and balanced. It shows citrus, green apple and mineral flavors, while partial barrel fermentation adds elements of smoky cream and buttered toast.  — S.H.  (2/1/2008)

Rodney Strong 2008 Reserve Chardonnay (Russian River Valley)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $35
Over-manipulated, a soft, sugary, buttered popcorn-tasting wine with pineapple jam flavors. The underlying fruit seems fine, but the winery needs to focus more on dryness and structure.  — S.H.  (7/1/2011)
