Rodney Strong

Rodney Strong Winery was the 13th bonded winery in Sonoma County back in 1959 making it one of the pioneers of the region's wine industry. Rodney Strong Vineyards grows and produces wines from grapes grown exclusively in Sonoma County's most revered appellations including Alexander Valley, Russian River Valley, Chalk Hill and Sonoma Coast. In 1989 the Klein Family purchased the winery and it has been family owned and operated ever since. With a long rooted background in California agriculture, their passion for sustainable farming practices, solar power and other green business practices led Rodney Strong to become Sonoma County's first carbon neutral winery. Rodney Strong wines are made from a number of various varietals including Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Their lines range from the affordable and value driven Sonoma County wines, to their Estate Alexander Valley and Russian River Valley wines, all the way up to their premium Reserve wines. They also offer three single vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon selections as well as their Symmetry Bordeaux blend which all tend to earn the highest ratings according to our Rodney Strong ratings. Rodney Strong 2005 Chardonnay (Sonoma County)

  1. $15
Made from three prime growing regions, Russian River, Chalk Hill and Sonoma Coast, this Chard offers lots of complexity at a good price. It’s a forthright wine, rich in peach pie flavors, including the smoky, buttery pie crust, and is entirely dry. Amazingly good when you consider the massive production: 185,000 cases.  — S.H.  (4/1/2007)

Rodney Strong 2004 Reserve Zinfandel (Sonoma County)

  1. $30
Beautiful Sonoma Zin, sourced mainly from Alexander Valley. Although the winemaker had to struggle against shriveled, raisiny fruit, the wine shows a soft complexity. Ripe and forward in cherry-berry, tobacco, rum baba, coffee and crushed hard spices, it finishes long and dry.  — S.H.  (8/1/2007)

Rodney Strong 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon (Alexander Valley)

  1. $25
Spicy and delicious. Shows lush flavors of blackberries, cherries, black currants and smoky oak, with a rich, creamy streak of chocolate. This softly dry Cab is ready to drink now.  — S.H.  (12/15/2009)

Rodney Strong 2006 Brothers Ridge Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Alexander Valley)

  1. $75
This is a 100% Cabernet, grown further north than the winery’s amazing Rockaway bottling, which is to say in a hotter area. Comparisons are inevitable. Although it’s rich and even dramatic, it’s not as impressive a wine, showing a raisiny edge to the black currants and chocolate. Doesn’t have the balance for aging, so drink now with upscale beef and lamb dishes.  — S.H.  (2/1/2010)

Rodney Strong 2004 Pinot Noir (Russian River Valley)

  1. $19
Lovely, a Pinot that doesn’t slap you silly with extract, just flatters with sensuous pleasure. It’s a light-colored wine, with a delicately silky texture framing cherry, cranberry, cola and tea flavors, and is quite dry. Easy to find, with 12,000 cases produced.  — S.H.  (11/1/2006)

Rodney Strong 2002 Chardonnay (Chalk Hill)

  1. $18
Shows some nicely ripened pear and peach flavors that are enriched with sweet vanillins and toasty oak and a hit of yeasty lees. A firm spine of acidity provides cleanliness and balance to this tasty Chard.  — S.H.  (11/15/2004)

Rodney Strong 2008 Estate Vineyards Chardonnay (Chalk Hill)

  1. $22
Classy Chardonnay. Shows ripe, savory pineapple, Meyer lemon, lime and mineral flavors, brightened with crisp acidity and enriched with a touch of sweet oak. As rich as it is, it feels elegant and refined in the mouth.  — S.H.  (9/1/2010)
