Rodney Strong

Rodney Strong Winery was the 13th bonded winery in Sonoma County back in 1959 making it one of the pioneers of the region's wine industry. Rodney Strong Vineyards grows and produces wines from grapes grown exclusively in Sonoma County's most revered appellations including Alexander Valley, Russian River Valley, Chalk Hill and Sonoma Coast. In 1989 the Klein Family purchased the winery and it has been family owned and operated ever since. With a long rooted background in California agriculture, their passion for sustainable farming practices, solar power and other green business practices led Rodney Strong to become Sonoma County's first carbon neutral winery. Rodney Strong wines are made from a number of various varietals including Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Their lines range from the affordable and value driven Sonoma County wines, to their Estate Alexander Valley and Russian River Valley wines, all the way up to their premium Reserve wines. They also offer three single vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon selections as well as their Symmetry Bordeaux blend which all tend to earn the highest ratings according to our Rodney Strong ratings. Rodney Strong 2008 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon (Alexander Valley)

  1. $25
Pretty good price for a wine this good. It shows the modern style of softly appealing, slightly sweet fruit, with blackberry and cherry flavors, accented by smoky oak. Drink now.  — S.H.  (7/1/2011)

With just a tiny touch of oak, this wine’s fruit and acidity star. It has flavors of Meyer lemon, lime, green apple, vanilla, honey and white pepper, brightened by zesty acidity. A nice cocktail wine to drink now.  — S.H.  (3/1/2013)

Rodney Strong 1998 Reserve Pinot Noir (Northern Sonoma)

  1. $30
Capture's Pinot's delicate side, with smoky rasberry and vanilla notes and traces of tomato, rhubarb and tea. The tannins are delicate with soft acidity. A certain earthiness in the aroma and finish suggests mid-term cellaring.  — S.H.  (12/15/2001)

Rodney Strong 2005 Estate Pinot Noir (Russian River Valley)

  1. $20
Strikes the perfect balance between a Pinot that needs aging and one that’s perfectly drinkable now. Complex layers of cherries, blackberries, coffee, cola and smoky oak; shows the richness and vivacity of the best of RRV. Best now and for a couple of years.  — S.H.  (4/1/2007)

Rodney Strong 1997 Old Vines Zinfandel (Sonoma County)

  1. $18
Old vines from Russian River and Alexander valleys go into this spicy, briary, gamy Zin. There’s a dark undercurrent of tar, pipe tobacco and smoke that runs through the finish. The fruit is subsumed to clove and tobacco flavors; best with strongly spiced grilled foods.  — P.G.  (3/1/2001)

Rodney Strong 2005 Knotty Vines Estate Zinfandel (Sonoma County)

  1. $20
This is a Zin that needs a warmer vintage to really succeed, and 2005 was cool. It trades the richness of the ‘04 in favor of dried blackberry, tobacco, white pepper and herb flavors. The acid-tannin balance also is more notable. Quite good, but not great. Drink now.  — S.H.  (2/1/2008)
