Root 1 Winery was created in 2006 as a partnership between Viña Ventisquero of Rancagua, Chile and Winebow. Root 1 Vineyards are located in the Casablanca Valley, which is planted with Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir, and the Colchagua Valley which is where the Cabernet Sauvignon and Carmenere plantings are located. Root 1 wines are made solely from grapes which are grown on pure, ungrafted roots according to our Root 1 wine reviews. Since Root 1 was launched, Felipe Tosso has been chief winemaker after beginning his career at Concha Y Toro and joining the Viña Ventisquero winemaking team in 2000. Felipe’s respect and awareness of the surrounding environment has led to Viña Ventisquero earning certification as a 100% sustainable winery in 2011. While Root 1 now produces value driven wines from four different grape varieties it is still their Cabernet Sauvignon that receives the highest accolades according to our Root 1 wine ratings. A touch neutral on the nose, but overall this is a nice, minerally, grassy SB with lots of green apple and freshness. The palate offers depth and clarity, and the flavors of green fruits are good. Falls off on the finish, which seems flat compared to the rest of the wine.

Minerality and passion fruit aromas control the bouquet. The palate is fresh and zesty, with grapefruit, lime and green apple flavors. Holds its form and tightness on the finish, staying juicy and fresh from front to back.

A very good value-priced Cab with fresh tomato, herb, black cherry, blackberry and earthy aromas. The palate is healthy and stands up to scrutiny, while the flavors of cassis, berry, chocolate and pepper are correct and more than pleasant. Long and lasting on the finish. The best Root: 1 Cab to date.

Tropical fruit, gooseberry and green apple make for a nice nose, while the palate is solid and crisp as it emphasizes apple, citrus and green melon flavors. A touch of pepper on the finish seals the deal on this light and friendly wine.

Quiet on the nose and 100% inoffensive. The palate hints at bell pepper and green bean while also dealing ample pineapple and citrus. Turns a little tart and lean on the back end, but that frames the wine’s freshness, zest and energy. Another good Sauvignon Blanc from Chile that’s made to drink now.

A bit of burning bush and pepper work the nose along with plum and cotton candy. This is a simple but well-made Chilean Cab that offers mildly candied flavors along with some spice. It’s the standard stuff: color, body, warmth, sizzle and sweetness.

Aromas of nettle, gooseberry, grapefruit and mineral are sharp, distinct and varietally appropriate, while the wet, short palate is hollow but edged by green apple, gooseberry and other green fruit flavors. Zesty on the finish, but a little pithy. Drink right away.

Smells roasted and leathery, with a distinct earthy, baked bean-influenced set of aromas. Feels edgy but o.k., with generic boysenberry, chocolate and vanilla flavors. Shows buttery oak and carob on the finish.
