Rosenblum

Rosenblum Cellars was founded in 1978 by veterinarian Dr. Kent Rosenblum and his wife, Kathy. The Rosenblum winery is located in Alameda, California, where it produces its renowned Zinfandel, as well as Grenache, Petite Sirah, Syrah, Rhône-styled whites and dessert wines. In 2008, Diageo, the spirits, wine and beer giant, purchased Rosenblum Cellars. Among the Rosenblum wines designated Editors’ Choice by Wine Enthusiast Magazine are the 2004 Richard Sauret Vineyards Zinfandel (Paso Robles), 2001 Holbrook Mitchell Trio Bordeaux-style Red Blend (Napa Valley); and 2003 Rominger Vineyard Syrah (Yolo County). Rosenblum ratings have a proven track record with many 92+ point scores.

Rosenblum 2004 Appellation Series Zinfandel (San Francisco Bay)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $18
This has the high alcohol and finishing sweetness of so many Rosenblum red wines, but that’s why his customers flock to buy them. For me, it’s unbalanced, with its Porty, chocolate sauce taste.  — S.H.  (5/1/2007)

Rosenblum 2005 Richard Sauret Vineyard Zinfandel (Paso Robles)

  1. $25
Hot, soft and uninteresting. It’s not a bad wine, being clean and somewhat dry, but that softness results in a serious absence of structure, and there’s not enough fruity essence to compensate.  — S.H.  (12/1/2007)

Rosenblum 2005 Abba Vineyard Syrah (Lodi)

  1. $25
Simple and semi-sweet, this Syrah has cherry, peppermint and chocolate flavors accented by quite a dose of caramelly oak. Greater acidity would give it balance, but as things stand, it’s soft and melted.  — S.H.  (12/15/2007)

Rosenblum 2006 Richard Sauret Vineyards Zinfandel (Paso Robles)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $25
Like its immediate predecessor, the 2005, Rosenblum’s 2006 is rather hot and soft. It has some pleasant, baked fruit and cocoa flavors, but it also verges on raisiny-Porty, and lacks the acidity to give it life and zest.  — S.H.  (12/1/2008)

Rosenblum 2006 Rockpile Road Vineyard Zinfandel (Rockpile)

Nice flavors, with blackberries, pepper, licorice and beef jerky, but the wine is a little sweet and way too soft for balance.  — S.H.  (11/1/2009)

Rosenblum 2006 Maggie's Reserve Zinfandel (Sonoma Valley)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $45
Tastes like a sweet-and-sour cherry candy, with the acidity of a young ruby Port. Finishes with melted chocolate.  — S.H.  (11/1/2009)

Rosenblum 2008 Vintner’s Cuvée Sauvignon Blanc

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $10
Sugary, like pineapple and lemon jam melted down into wine. Yet it’s clean and zesty in acidity. If you like a sweet white, it’s all yours.  — S.H.  (10/1/2009)

Rosenblum 2006 Chateau La Paws Cote du Bone Blanc Red

  1. $14
Made overtly sweet, in the style of some Rosenblum wines, the Viognier, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Marsanne blend has sugary flavors of pineapples, peaches and apricots.  — S.H.  (12/31/2007)
