Rubiejo 2003 Oak Aged Tempranillo (Ribera del Duero)
-
$17
This young RdD was aged only five months in barrel, yet it has weight, softness and vanilla shadings as well as pure, unadulterated dark fruit. In a word, it’s delicious; the round blackberry and cherry flavors are great and the chocolate and smoke that sneak up on the finish seal the deal. A bit too expensive to be a Best Buy, but still a very good deal. Imported…

Rubiejo 2006 Young Tempranillo (Ribera del Duero)
-
$12
Rubiejo makes one of the best, most consistent jovens in all of Spain, let alone Ribera del Duero. The 2006 is typically deep and earthy, with five months worth of hickory and leather poking through. The flavors run toward blackberry and chocolate, while some vanilla comes in late. Chewy and big, with mass appeal.

Rubiejo 2005 Young Tempranillo (Ribera del Duero)
-
$12
Rubiejo seems to have a way with young, spunky, simple wines. Their Jovenes of the past few years have been fruity and broad, but also balanced and down to earth. This grapy youngster shows floral, fleshy aromas backed by black fruit flavors that are likable but impossible to distinguish. It’s big but weightless, meaning it’s like a pastry with lots of calories…

Rubiejo 2004 Young Tempranillo (Ribera del Duero)

$12
Talk about a colorful, bold, jammy red! It’s heavily extracted and, as the label notes, young as can be. The fruit is heavy, dark to the point of teeth-staining, and tannic. Not sophisticated or meant for fine dining, but full of fruit and life. Tastes good but is unequivocally rambunctious.
