Rated the top Chenin in South Africa in 2005, this is a serious but delicious wine. It has a toasty character from wood fermentation and aging, but a character which does not dominate the sweet fruit. Spice and honey come from the tropical flavors, but the final taste is of crispness and acidity.

Rudera, derived from the Latin word rudus meaning broken fragments of stone, is a heady and deep Cab matured in French oak for 22 months. Dark and rich, there’s ample cigar box spice, bramble and cocoa accents to the black fruit core. The mouth is lush, like crushed satin, with good grip and balanced acidity.

Attractively ripe aromas of melon and softly baked apples lead the nose, with a touch of sweet smokiness, almost like cured bacon, following close behind. Medium weight with balanced, lifting acidity and a spice-infused clementine rind finish.

There’s great richness to the nose, with a seriously decadent and robust apple-pie aroma. The palate shows a bit more balance and restraint, with ripe flavors of fig and melon fleshing out the creamy texture but staying bright thanks to lifting acidity. The evolving finish transitions from fruit to spice and finally ends on a citrus pith flavor.

This wine starts off with an enticing honeycomb and baked apple aroma, followed by secondary accents of baking spice and orange zest. The fully textured mouth is loaded with dried peach and apricot flavors, followed by a nice citrus zip that adds spring to the long finish.

This could be an impressive wine, but the overwhelming wood element makes it hard to taste the fruit. There are just hints of ripe spice and creamy apples, and the aftertaste is just off dry. Imported by Cape Classics.

A perfumed, jammy wine, full of flavor. There is also a more serious element to this wine from the Hall's first vintage in their own winery. The tannin dryness, ripe wood flavors and cassis flavors suggest good aging, as well as good food pairing.

This Chenin seems to have an older soul than its peers, with mature notes of honeyed almond and sweet spice that infiltrate the Anjou pear and hard peach flavors. Citrus pith adds a touch of bitterness to the otherwise toasty, sweet spice-infused finish.
