Rudera 2002 Robusto Chenin Blanc (Stellenbosch)

  • Online Exclusive
Rated the top Chenin in South Africa in 2005, this is a serious but delicious wine. It has a toasty character from wood fermentation and aging, but a character which does not dominate the sweet fruit. Spice and honey come from the tropical flavors, but the final taste is of crispness and acidity.  — R.V.  (11/15/2005)

Rudera 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon (South Africa)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $22
Rudera, derived from the Latin word rudus meaning broken fragments of stone, is a heady and deep Cab matured in French oak for 22 months. Dark and rich, there’s ample cigar box spice, bramble and cocoa accents to the black fruit core. The mouth is lush, like crushed satin, with good grip and balanced acidity.  — L.B.  (3/1/2012)

Rudera 2009 Robusto Chenin Blanc (Stellenbosch)

  1. $21
Attractively ripe aromas of melon and softly baked apples lead the nose, with a touch of sweet smokiness, almost like cured bacon, following close behind. Medium weight with balanced, lifting acidity and a spice-infused clementine rind finish.  — L.B.  (5/1/2012)

Rudera 2004 Chenin Blanc (Stellenbosch)

  1. $20
This could be an impressive wine, but the overwhelming wood element makes it hard to taste the fruit. There are just hints of ripe spice and creamy apples, and the aftertaste is just off dry. Imported by Cape Classics.  — R.V.  (11/15/2005)

Rudera 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon (Stellenbosch)

  1. $44
A perfumed, jammy wine, full of flavor. There is also a more serious element to this wine from the Hall's first vintage in their own winery. The tannin dryness, ripe wood flavors and cassis flavors suggest good aging, as well as good food pairing.  — R.V.  (11/1/2006)

Rudera 2009 De Tradisie Chenin Blanc (Stellenbosch)

  1. $19
This Chenin seems to have an older soul than its peers, with mature notes of honeyed almond and sweet spice that infiltrate the Anjou pear and hard peach flavors. Citrus pith adds a touch of bitterness to the otherwise toasty, sweet spice-infused finish.  — L.B.  (5/1/2012)

Rudera 2003 Syrah (Stellenbosch)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $27
A mild nose of dark berries and violets uncovers grilled meat, mineral, and finely oaked berry fruits. The structure is tightly wound, acidity wrapping tannins in a silky feel. Lacks the power of some other Syrahs, but a fine wine nevertheless. Imported by Cape Classics.  — M.D.  (9/1/2006)

Rudera 2004 Syrah (Stellenbosch)

  1. $27
Earthy tobacco, smoke and spice on the nose and a fruit-forward palate make this expressive Shiraz an attractive cohort to smoked meat dishes and cheese assortments. The wine has a backbone of toasted oak and a smooth character.  — S.K.  (11/15/2007)
