Rulo Winery 2004 Syrah (Columbia Valley (WA))

  • Editors' Choice
  • Online Exclusive
  1. $19
Don’t let the nondescript label fool you; this is serious juice. Dark, sappy, spicy and dense, it comes on with flavors of baking chocolate and smoked meat, scented with violets and citrus, and finishes with bracing green tea tannins. A strong, muscular, substantial effort.  — P.G.  (8/1/2006)

Rulo Winery 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon (Columbia Valley (WA))

  1. $30
Pure, classic Cabernet. Young, tight, tannic and tart, yet it is already drinking well and built for aging. Great balance and structure.  — P.G.  (9/1/2004)

Rulo Winery 2003 Vanessa Vineyard Chardonnay (Walla Walla Valley (WA))

  1. $20
From a two acre plot in Walla Walla, this lush, elegant wine shows Kurt Schlicker’s deft, complex approach to winemaking. 100% barrel fermented, it clocks in at 14% alcohol and tastes of clean fruit, with light hints of buttered toast and toasted nuts. Elegant and sophisticated, it shows a deft touch with the wood.  — P.G.  (12/15/2005)

Rulo Winery 2004 Combine Sauvignon Blanc (Columbia Valley (WA))

  • Best Buy
  1. $15
This is Sauvignon Blanc with a 14% blast of Viognier; the combination is vivid and bracing, like a dash through a cold mountain spring. All stainless, no malolactic. It’s cool as ice, clear and leesy, and the tart fruit is edged with citrus rind flavors, a nice mix of orange, lemon and lime.  — P.G.  (6/1/2006)

Rulo Winery 2004 Sundance Vineyard Chardonnay (Columbia Valley (WA))

  1. $20
Yet another outstanding effort from Rulo, this appealing Chardonnay marries pretty peach flavors to a mix of spices from 100% French oak barrel fermentation. Cinnamon and other Asian spices, along with barrel toast, provide a nice counterpoint to the ripe fruit.  — P.G.  (6/1/2006)

Rulo Winery 2002 Silo Syrah (Columbia Valley (WA))

  1. $25
This is a single-vineyard Syrah, from a Wahluke Slope vineyard, and it has plenty of grapy, gamy, juicy fruit. Clean and light-footed, with bracing acid and sweet/tangy fruit, this is a high-wire wine made for a big, fat, meaty burger or steak.  — P.G.  (9/1/2004)

Rulo Winery 2004 Viognier (Columbia Valley (WA))

  1. $18
Here is Viognier picked early enough to feature flavors of citrus rind rather than ripe peach. There is also a powerful herbal note, tasting of juniper and quinine, that lays down a spicy spine in the wine. All stainless, no malolactic; it’s crisp, precise and laser-like in its focus.  — P.G.  (6/1/2006)

Rulo Winery 2002 Syrah (Columbia Valley (WA))

  1. $18
A gem. Meaty, bacon fat nose, strikingly clear, purple-hued colors, and sweet, seductive fruit. What more can one ask of an $18 Syrah? This is elegant, strong and supple, with a long life ahead of it.  — P.G.  (9/1/2004)
