Rumball NV SB13 Sparkling Shiraz (South Eastern Australia)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $26
Very dark and intense, this decidedly acquired taste is nonetheless very impressive. A serious Shiraz with bubbles, this shows deep black cherry, earth, soy and coffee aromas and flavors. Medium-weight, with an even bead, it finishes long, dry and complex. Recommended for the adventurous palate.  — M.M.  (12/1/2001)

Rumball NV SB17 Coonawarra Cuvée Sparkling Shiraz (Coonawarra)

  1. $27
Has some herbal, medicinal overtones to the bouquet, which is otherwise rather fruity and appealing, while the strawberry and cherry flavors are slightly piney or resinous. Medium in weight, it retains a sense of freshness on the finish that makes it drinkable on its own or with food.  — J.C.  (12/31/2006)

Rumball NV M3 Coonawarra Cuvée Sparkling Merlot (Coonawarra)

  1. $28
Sparkling reds are a bit of an acquired taste, but this is a relatively easy introduction. Raspberry fruit is laced with chocolate and vanilla flavors that come across as reasonably balanced in weight, but with a touch of sweetness on the finish.  — J.C.  (12/31/2006)

Rumball NV SB16 Coonawarra Cuvée Sparkling Shiraz (Coonawarra)

  1. $26
One of the best-known sparkling Shriaz makers in Australia, Peter Rumball's Coonawarra version offers some stewy fruit aromas and flavors, and caramel accents on the palate. However dark its flavors sound, it's still feels fresh on the palate. Finishes short.  — D.T.  (12/31/2004)
