There’s plenty of concentrated Cabernet fruit to stand up to the smoky oak in this delicious new wine. It has ripe flavors of blackcurrants, cherries, herbs and chocolate, toned up with ripe, sweet tannins that turn gritty on the finish. Tastes like an ager, but it’s awfully nice right now.

The wine is dry and tannic right out of the bottle, with a firm, hard mouthfeel that combines austerity with elegance. Buried deep is a core of oak-accented cassis and cherry fruit. Best to decant this young wine for up to eight hours to let it breathe and develop.

The winery released its regular ’05 Cabernet nearly two years ago. Now comes the Reserve. It was worth the wait. The tannins are beginning to resolve, making the wine approachable now. It has tremendously rich flavors of blackberries, currants, chocolate and cedar, and should continue to develop through 2011.

An enormously rich, compelling but young, Cabernet. Really impresses for its sour cherry and blackberry candy flavors, and the sophisticated layering of smoky, vanilla-scented oak. Feels ultrarefined, but also quite tannic. Needs time. Better after 2013, with proper storage.

Very dry and tannic, a style of Cabernet that relies more on structure than flash. Despite fairly high alcohol, it keeps a tight rein on the blackberries and cedar, locking the flavors in astringency. Needs time. Give it until 2013 and see where it goes.

Good, rich Zinfandel that brings a Napa elegance and sophistication to the variety’s wild and woolly personality. The briary, brambly thing is all here, with wild berry, cocoa, nutmeg, cinnamon and pepper flavors, and the exuberance is distinctively Zinny, but the wine has the body and balance of a fine Merlot.

A very good Cab with polished blackberry, plum and herb flavors, and some gritty tannins that turn astringent on the finish, although they’re accompanied by ripe, sweet fruit. It’s very dry, with a great structure that calls for fine foods.

Lots of richness in this Cabernet. It shows the sunshiney ripeness of well-grown Napa fruit, bursting with flavors of blackberries, cherries and cassis. Easy to like, with some real complexity.
