Here’s a wine for real Pinotphiles. It’s just exquisite, but it’s not for neophytes, because it takes an understanding of the variety. Pale in color, silky and delicate in structure, it shows Green Valley’s ability to produce great Pinot. There’s tremendous oak, but it meshes perfectly with the cola, cherry, rosehip tea and Asian spice flavors. Drink now—2012.

This is the best of Rutz’s current releases due to the sheer richness of the wine, which comes from a vineyard made famous by the vintner, Merry Edwards. It’s crisp in acidity, and elegantly silky in the mouth, with pomegranate, cola, cherry, rhubarb, rosehip tea and spice flavors. It’s very complex now, showing classic Russian River character, and should age well…

How lush and delicious this wine is! Juicy and rich in the mouth, meaty and full-bodied and quite acidic, yet the texture is light as a feather. The complex flavors range from blackberry and cherry through dried herbs to sauteed mushroom and soy, with a honey-sweet finish. Sheer delight, textbook Russian River Valley Pinot Noir.

A brilliant evocation of Russian River Chard, beginning with the strong fruit. Flavors veer toward guava, nectarine and breadfruit, with plenty of Oriental spices. Oak and lees provide creamy complexities, but are in balance. Finally, wonderfully bright acidity undergirds the structure.

Rutz 2003 River Road Pinot Noir (Russian River Valley)

River Road is where Rochioli and Williams Selyem are located. Good neighborhood. The pale color tells you the body is silky, but there’s nothing light about the wine. It’s very dry and elegant, with complex layers of cola, cherry, root beer, beetroot and licorice flavors that finish with a tremendous fireworks of spice. Drink now through 2010.

A rich, balanced Chard, one that impresses with ripeness, wood, and winemaker bells and whistles without tripping into excess. Perfectly ripened peach and pear fruit is nicely offset by oaky notes and just-right acids. The creamy texture is a pleasure, but it’s really balance that defines this wine.
