Saint Cosme 2004 Syrah (Côte Rôtie)
Online Exclusive
Price
$65
Saint Cosme assembles this wine from seven different parcels and gives it a relatively short (2 week) maceration. The result is a wine of exceptional complexity and finesse, starting with delicate herb and violet aromas. Red plum and stone fruit flavors take hold of the midpalate, yet there’s always an intriguing spice note in the background. Rich, yet fresh, with…

Saint Cosme 2003 Red (Châteauneuf-du-Pape)
Online Exclusive
Price
$65
In ‘03, I missed the freshness, laments owner Louis Barruol, but even so, this is darn good wine. Chocolate and plum flavors are accented by spice. It’s dense and rich, and while one acknowledges a certain lack of acidity, the wine is nevertheless harmonious.

Saint Cosme 2004 Viognier (Condrieu)

Barrel-fermented, and it shows in the richly toasty and honeyed aromas and creamy texture. It’s a round, mouthfilling wine, yet doesn’t seem fat or overdone in any way, weaving melon, honey and spice flavors in an ample web of flavor. Long on the finish. Drink now.

Saint Cosme 2004 Les Deux Albion Red (Côtes du Rhône)

Price
$14
A standout bottling from an artisanal producer at a bargain price. What more could a Rhône-lover want? The complex aromas are the first clue this is something special, offering a mix of herbs, game, roasted black cherries and a hint of horse blanket. Black fruit, leather and spice flavors mark the palate, which is supple and layered in texture.

Saint Cosme 2005 Les Deux Albion Red (Côtes du Rhône)
Price
$20
From a vineyard near Cairanne, this is a young, muscular wine not necessarily intended for early consumption. Recently bottled prior to tasting, it showed some slightly reductive, rubbery notes at first, and then opened to reveal rich blackberry fruit and firm tannins. Drink 2008–2015.

Saint Cosme 2004 Syrah (Saint-Joseph)
Price
$35
Crisp and slightly herbal, with powerful cassis flavors that lack that extra bit of spice and nuance. Still, it’s clean and well made, with a long finish. Drink now–2012.

Saint Cosme 2005 Syrah (Côtes du Rhône)
Price
$15
Made from 100% Syrah off a terroir rich in clay, this has very peppery aromas but also notes of violet and cassis. On the palate, it’s quite firm but packed with crunchy dark-berry fruit. Drink now with foods that will tame the tannins, or hold up to 2013.

Saint Cosme 2008 Red (Côte Rôtie)
Online Exclusive
Price
$63
A confounding wine with a contrasting combination of size and sheering acidity. The color is typically dark and the nose meaty and earthy, with tart berry aromas and pepper. The palate is both round and sharp, with acids that poke and prod and flavors of olive, butter, coffee and toast. Finishes oaky and in the words of one panelist, "a little thin."
