Salentein 2003 Reserve Malbec (Uco Valley)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $62
This is the best and most expensive wine ever released by Dutch-owned Salentein, and it proves that this winery has finally mastered Mendoza. The color is excellent and the nose is full of bold fruit, leather, mint and more. It’s a huge Malbec with saturated cassis and black cherry flavors, and the feel and lushness are just right. For a ripe mini monster that’s…  — M.S.  (10/1/2007)

Salentein 2004 Primum Malbec (Uco Valley)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $64
Year by year, Salentein’s top wines are improving. Primum is truly a fine wine, right up there with the country’s best. It’s harmonious and inviting, with cola, mineral, floral notes and honest black fruit aromas and flavors. The feel is secure and tight but also well balanced, with a touch of molasses but mostly just deep, driving black fruit. Muscular, intense…  — M.S.  (12/1/2008)

Salentein 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon (Mendoza)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $18
A New World Cabernet close in structure to a good Sonoma bottling. Rich and ripe, with blackcurrant, cassis and herb flavors and rich, distinguished tannins. Oak adds subtlely and does not overwhelm. Easily as good as many California bottlings costing 2 or 3 times as much.  — S.H.  (1/1/2002)

Salentein 2001 Malbec (Mendoza)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $18
This is a strong wine, similar in flavor and structure to a big mountain Cabernet, but with distinctive flavors. It pours very dark and closed. Airing reveals grilled meat, cassis and plum aromas. Drinks dry and powerful, with big but accessible tannins.  — S.H.  (1/1/2002)

Salentein 2010 Reserve Malbec (Uco Valley)

  1. $19
Compact, concentrated and clean, with all its components in place. The bouquet is dark with charcoal, but bright with berry fruit aromas. The mouthfeel is comfortable and balanced, with sweet berry flavors offset by mild spice and proper oak. Soft tannins define the finish; a fine Malbec that doesn’t overdo it.  — M.S.  (5/1/2012)

Salentein 2004 Numina Spirit Vineyard Gran Coste Malbec-Merlot (Uco Valley)

  1. $35
Malbec with 30% Merlot; Numina starts off with dark mineral and crude oil aromas that give way to floral scents before flavors of cherry, blackberry, chocolate and pepper. There’s a lot going on and overall this attempt at a high-end, powerful red blend is successful. It’s much better balanced than many of Salentein’s “bigger” wines, including Primus.  — M.S.  (8/1/2008)

Salentein 2004 Malbec (Uco Valley)

  1. $19
Lovely up front, with lavender, licorice and pepper accenting live-wire blackberry aromas. Jammy and extracted in the mouth, with pure berry flavors. This is a mountain of a wine that doesn’t pull its punches. Expect weight, tannin and extract but also a lot of flavor.  — M.S.  (12/1/2006)

Salentein 2003 Syrah (Uco Valley)

  1. $19
Salentein, after a few years of finding its way in Tupungato, has hit the mark with this tobacco- and spice-driven Syrah. The bouquet is ripe, with a hint of prune and earth, while the palate is full, juicy and full of berries, vanilla and coconut. Modern and woody, but satisfying.  — M.S.  (12/1/2006)
