Samsara 2008 Las Hermanas Vineyard Pinot Noir (Sta. Rita Hills)

  1. $44
An exotic Pinot Noir, feral and exciting in its appeal. Wildly complex, with the scents of a summertime walk through a coastal California woodland. Forest floor, mushroom, wild cherries and raspberries, roasted shank bone, licorice, sandalwood—the flavors go on and on, balanced with crisp acidity. So dry; a joy to experience.  — S.H.  (12/31/2010)

Samsara 2007 Turner Vineyard Pinot Noir (Sta. Rita Hills)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $45
Partial whole-cluster fermentation gives this wine a chewy, spicy density, while new oak adds a flamboyant sweetness to the underlying cherry and blackberry fruit. The result is dry, rich, complex and ageworthy. Best after 2011, if you can keep your hands off it.  — S.H.  (11/1/2009)

Samsara 2006 Melville Vineyard Pinot Noir (Sta. Rita Hills)

  1. $42
Very full-bodied and rich, a densely structured wine that’s too young to appreciate now. The cherries, raspberries, currants, roasted coconut, mocha frappuccino, date nut bread, candied ginger, orange tea and sandalwood are exotic and almost overpowering, but the wine never loses its tense control. Now through 2012, at least.  — S.H.  (12/1/2008)

Samsara 2008 Turner Vineyard Pinot Noir (Sta. Rita Hills)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $46
The vineyard is right next to those of Melville and Babcock, in the appellation’s northern tenderloin. The wine is rich, full-bodied and ripe, quite dense and concentrated. Shows masses of black cherries, raspberries, currants, licorice, beef jerky and spicy sandalwood, leading to a long finish. This Pinot Noir needs time. Best after 2013.  — S.H.  (12/31/2010)

Samsara 2006 Melville Vineyard Syrah (Sta. Rita Hills)

  1. $40
Bold, exciting and unique. Offers wave after wave of crushed blackberries, espresso, teriaki beef, black pepper and cedar, dusted with exotic Asian spices. The tannins are rich, fine and authoritative. Really a beautiful, Northern Rhône-style Syrah, made from one of the appellation’s great vineyards. Drink now, with decanting, and over the next six years.  — S.H.  (11/1/2009)

Samsara 2008 Ampelos Vineyard Syrah (Sta. Rita Hills)

  1. $38
One hundred percent whole cluster fermentation makes this young Syrah vigorously tannic and spicy. It’s enormously rich and concentrated in white pepper, currant, violet, grilled meat and cedar flavors, with a core of grilled blackberries. Feels important and distinguished in the mouth, an elegant wine for an elegant meal. Drink now through 2014.  — S.H.  (2/1/2011)

Samsara 2009 Kessler-Haak Vineyard Pinot Noir (Sta. Rita Hills)

  1. $46
Just wonderful, showing the great richness and complexity of a top Santa Rita Pinot Noir. Partial whole-cluster fermentation gives the wine a spicy earthiness and full-bodied tannins, yet the underlying red berry and cherry fruit shines through. Showing well now and over the next six years.  — S.H.  (5/1/2012)

Samsara 2009 Melville Vineyard Syrah (Sta. Rita Hills)

Rich, extracted and dramatic, dazzling in blackberry, currant, anise and smoky aromas and flavors. It’s a big, tannic, flamboyant young wine, just at the start of its journey. Will hold well through 2015 and possibly beyond.  — S.H.  (5/1/2012)
