Sandrone 2001 Cannubi Boschis Nebbiolo (Barolo)
-
$135
Absolutely lovely. It starts off dense and tarry on the nose, with plum and chocolate fudge scents, then adds layers of bright floral and cherry notes with airing, while the palate is a whirl of mouthcoating flavors that never seem hamhanded despite the great intensity. Finishes with wonderfully plush tannins, making this approachable now, yet capable of evolving…

Sandrone 2001 Le Vigne Nebbiolo (Barolo)
-
$120
Great stuff, combining traditional Barolo flavors—dusty earth, leather, floral notes and cherries—with modern touches, like the supple tannins and hints of hickory smoke. This is a big, powerful wine that manages to be burly without being clumsy, intellectually challenging and complex while still delivering lush fruit. Drinkable now, but better several years from…

Sandrone 1998 Dolcetto (Dolcetto d'Alba)
-
$25
A beautiful Dolcetto, defining the state-of-the-art for this grape. Black cherry, violets, roses, and vanilla mark the lovely nose. Robust flavors of cherry, chocolate, and licorice mark the palate. The feel is plush and round, but still substantial, with an admirable seamlessness.

Sandrone 2005 Dolcetto (Dolcetto d'Alba)
-
$22
As with many of the wines of Sandrone, it is easy to be beguiled by the fruit, and miss the underlying structure holding it together. This is true of the Dolcetto, where the wine initially shows plenty of dark fruit and a touch of mint, but gains a spicy complexity as it takes in air. The wine will benefit from a couple of years in the bottle, but is delicious now.

Sandrone 2005 Barbera (Barbera d'Alba)
-
$36
Sandrone has always been a reliable source for great Barolo, and he has put some of his magic into his Barberas. This is an attractive wine with a stunning nose of dark fruit, licorice and smoked meat. The fruit is ripe and very rich, with relatively low acidity. Finishes well, with a medium/long soft, layered finish.
