Santi 2007 Proemio Red (Amarone della Valpolicella)

  1. $70
Proemio is a modern and confident expression of Amarone that sees a complicated aging regime based on various sizes of oak barrel, from small to very big. This approach helps fulfill a promise of complexity, smoothness and overall fruit intensity.  — M.L.  (12/1/2011)

Santi 1996 Proemio Red (Amarone della Valpolicella)

  1. $51
Wonderful flavors of dark fruits, minerals and licorice comprise this brawny red. There’s also a nice toasty element, like roasted nuts, which is probably a result of new oak aging that brings added complexity. The alcohol is in balance. This fine wine will be best enjoyed in 2003 and beyond.  — J.F.  (9/1/2001)

Santi 2006 Proemio Red (Amarone della Valpolicella)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $70
Amarone Proemio shows mature fruit aromas of black cherry and blackberry jam backed by elegant tones of clove, pepper, cola and cedar wood. The wine represents a smooth, clean and traditional style that would pair with grilled steak or roast pork.  — M.L.  (2/1/2011)

Santi 2003 Proemio Red (Amarone della Valpolicella)

  1. $65
Here is a refreshing approach to Amarone only because this wine is not overextracted or concentrated. It charges forward with a leaner, more elegant approach that allows distinct berry, spice and crushed black pepper notes to appear without too much power or weight. The mouthfeel is smooth, caressing and leaves lasting sweet berry flavors.  — M.L.  (10/1/2007)

Santi 2004 Proemio Red (Amarone della Valpolicella)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $65
This Amarone tastes very sweet and mature. It’s a spice- and oak-driven wine that tastes older than it really is because of its resiny patina of molasses and pine and austere flavors of dried prunes and raisins. It does offer thick concentration and extra sweetness on the close.  — M.L.  (12/1/2008)

Santi 2003 Red (Amarone della Valpolicella)

  1. $45
Managed by Italy’s leading wine company, GIV, this is a traditional Amarone with sweet spice aromas, white stone, brown sugar and pulsing forest berry. The aromatic intensity is not huge, but it is balanced and the wine delivers fine, dusty tannins on the close.  — M.L.  (10/1/2007)

Santi 2006 Solane Red (Valpolicella Superiore Ripasso)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $17
Here’s a sophisticated and austere ripasso made from Corvina (75%) and Rondinella with aromas of old spice, dried figs and prunes. There’s cinnamon and crushed cardamom at the back and the wine seems older than what you can expect from a 2006 vintage. Drink it now. Imported by Frederick Wildman & Sons, Ltd.  — M.L.  (10/1/2009)

Santi 2005 Sortesele Pinot Grigio (Delle Venezie)

  1. $14
Toasted almond notes rise above well-integrated fruit flavors like peach, pineapple and banana. This wine isn’t so fleshy, but offers a nice palate-cleansing freshness instead. Imported by Frederick Wildman & Sons, Ltd.  — M.L.  (6/1/2006)
