Enormously rich and powerful, showing tremendous authority. Oozes ripe, candied raspberry, cherry, sweet cola, licorice, pie spice and sandalwood flavors, wrapped into ripe, fine tannins. Feels really toned, sculpted, with a long, dry, spicy finish. Drink now through 2014.

Saudade 2007 Split Rock Vineyard Pinot Noir (Sonoma Coast)

Shows its cool-climate origins with a certain austerity that accompanies the exotic wild cherry, currant, Mandarin orange and root beer flavors, accented with sweet smoky oak. A rush of acids and tannins takes over the palate, strongly suggesting modest ageability. Give this Pinot Noir a year or two in the cellar.

Tough, dry and gritty in tannins and acids, a young, fresh wine with jammy raspberry, cherry, buttered oak and spice flavors. Tastes a bit direct, like a fruit cola drink. But there’s an elegant purity and inherent finesse that suggest this Pinot Noir might do interesting things over the next six years. Could improve dramatically.

Saudade 2007 La Encantada Vineyard Pinot Noir (Sta. Rita Hills)

This Pinot would have benefited from being held back before release at the age of one year. It shows a certain immaturity, with primary fruit flavors that are unintegrated with the oak. But it’s rich and opulent. Give it until late 2009.
