Sbragia 2006 Monte Rosso Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Sonoma Valley)
Cellar Selection
Price
$50
One for the cellar. It’s vibrantly rich and forward in blackberries, black cherries, plums, dark chocolate and sweet smoky new oak, yet very tannic. Creates an astringency that lasts through the spicy finish. It would be a pity to open it before 2012, and will last for years after.

Sbragia 2006 Rancho Del Oso Cabernet Sauvignon (Howell Mountain)
Price
$75
This is the most accessible, most interesting and most compelling of Sbragia’s new Cabernets. It’s extraordinarily powerful in the potent, sweetly refined tannins and ripe flavors of blackberries and cassis, leading to a long, rich finish. You can drink it now, but it will age effortlessly for a good 8–10 years.

Sbragia 2002 Rancho del Oso Cabernet Sauvignon (Howell Mountain)
Cellar Selection
Price
$75
True to its mountain appellation, this is a big, dark, young tannic wine. It is dramatically lush in black currant and chocolate fruit, seasoned with 100% new French oak. The tannins have been wrestled into soft, lush compliance. This is a fabulous Cabernet, drinkable now but with the structure to age for many years.

Sbragia 2006 Cimarossa Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Howell Mountain)
Cellar Selection
Price
$75
Ed Sbragia is making some of the most interesting single-vineyard Cabernets in California. This one, from Howell Mountain, shows the density and power that typify all his wines. Although it’s thoroughly dry, it tastes almost sweet in grilled blackberry marmalade flavors, balanced with good acidity and wonderfully fine tannins. Feels like it has the capacity to age…

Sbragia 2003 Monte Rosso Cabernet Sauvignon (Sonoma Valley)
Cellar Selection
Price
$50
This is the second vintage Sbragia has accessed this vineyard. The result is a spectacular 100% Cabernet, stunning now but cellar-worthy. It’s a big wine, decadent in cassis and milk chocolate fruit that’s massively oaked and ample in tannins, but somehow it all pulls together to make for balance and harmony. Should hold and improve through 2015, at least.

Sbragia 2004 Monte Rosso Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Sonoma Valley)
Cellar Selection
Online Exclusive
Price
$50
From the famed Monte Rosso Vineyard Ed Sbragia has crafted a wine that needs time in the cellar. Strong, hard tannins shut down the currant and cherry fruit, making the wine astringent. But it’s a very fine mountain Cab, and will reward aging. Should begin to be approachable by 2010, and continue developing for many more years.

Sbragia 2004 Rancho Del Oso Cabernet Sauvignon (Howell Mountain)
Cellar Selection

Price
$75
Those mountain tannins are here in spades, and even though they’re ripe and sweet, they give the wine a powerful astringency that demands cellaring. But age will certainly reward, for the wine is huge in currant, black cherry and unsweetened chocolate flavors. Open after 2010 and the fruit will shine through in all its ripe, succulent glory.

Sbragia 2005 Rancho del Oso Cabernet Sauvignon (Howell Mountain)
Cellar Selection
Price
$75
Shows classic Howell Mountain tight, hard tannins that lock down the flavors and make the wine astringent. But what flavors they are. Just detonates on the palate with massive blackberries, currants, plums, chocolate and cedar, with incredible depth and length. Desperately needs time. Best after 2011.
