Schild Estate 2004 Sparkling Shiraz (Barossa)
-
$24
Schild Estate seems to have found its stride in 2004, fashioning a solid lineup of wines across the board. This inky purple sparkler bursts from the glass with assertive blackberry and blueberry fruit, but it’s accented by vanilla, cinnamon and crushed pepper, giving it uncommon complexity. Finishes long and powerful, framed by soft tannins.

Schild Estate 2005 Ben Schild Reserve Shiraz (Barossa)

$48
Not quite up to the standards set by the 2004, this is nevertheless an excellent Shiraz, full-bodied and lush. Blackberry fruit dominates the aromas, framed by vanilla and just a touch of dill. Folds in plenty of earthy complexity on the palate, plus hints of cola and coffee, making this more than a simple fruit-and-oak confection. Drink now–2015.
