Sean Thackrey NV Pleiades XIX Old Vines Red (California)

  • Editors' Choice
  • Online Exclusive
  1. $24
With a translucent ruby color and silky texture, this could be a Pinot Noir. But it’s a blend of Sangiovese, Voignier, Mourvèdre and several other varieties, and shows its own unique profile. Dry and crisp, the flavors are fruity, floral, herbal and spicy. Raspberries, cherries, thyme, white pepper, bacon, oregano and smoky sandalwood only begin to describe the…  — S.H.  (6/1/2011)

Sean Thackrey 2008 Sirius Eaglepoint Ranch Petite Sirah (Mendocino County)

  1. $45
Eaglepoint Ranch has been source to powerful red wines for many years, and here’s another one. It impressives for the volume of tannins and fruity ripeness. Swamps the mouth with blackberry and cherry marmalade, bacon, pepper spice and smoky oak flavors that are huge, yet balanced in tannins, oak and acidity. The alcohol is 15.2%.  — S.H.  (6/1/2011)

Sean Thackrey 2008 Orion Rossi Vineyard Red (St. Helena)

  1. $90
Made from a 106-year-old vineyard in Napa Valley, this wine is usually referred to as Syrah, but its exact components are difficult to define, except to call the wine Rhône-like. It’s luxuriously soft in the mouth, with complex flavors of black raspberries, cocoa, cola, herbs, peppery spices and sandalwood. Extraordinarily rich, the wine develops bottle nuances as…  — S.H.  (6/1/2011)

Sean Thackrey 2009 Rossi Vineyard Orion Red (St. Helena)

  1. $90
Elaborate and impressive, in the manner of Sean Thackrey, a big, rich, alcoholic wine with massive flavors. The blackberries and currants are swamped with black pepper and various exotic spices, and the finish is thoroughly dry. There’s nothing shy or subtle about this wine, but it does express what California’s sun does so well.  — S.H.  (10/1/2011)

Sean Thackrey 2008 Andromeda Devil's Gulch Ranch Pinot Noir (Marin County)

  1. $45
An eccentric wine. Rather heavy for a classic coastal Pinot Noir, yet not without charismatic charm. Shows rich, deep flavors of wild raspberries, toffee, vanilla bean and smoky wood. Gathers momentum and interest as it breathes in the glass. Could substitute for everything from Zinfandel to Grenache. Drink now.  — S.H.  (6/1/2011)

Sean Thackrey 2000 Orion - Rossi Vineyard - Native Red Wine (St. Helena)

  1. $65
Not labeled as Petite Sirah, but included in the tasting based on Dr. Carole Meredith’s analysis of the vineyard. Winemaker Thackrey doesn’t necessarily agree. The wine itself is big, bold and black, with strong eucalyptus elements that will polarize a crowd. Richly textured, with firm tannins and a long finish that bodes well for aging.  — W.E.  (4/1/2003)

Sean Thackrey 2010 Noble Vineyard Lyra Viognier (Knights Valley)

  1. $36
A powerful, audacious Viognier, explosive in tropical fruit, vanilla, buttered toast and butterscotch flavors. All that richness is balanced by crisp acidity and a fine minerality. Still, it’s a big, honeyed wine for drinking now.  — S.H.  (11/1/2011)
