Sebastiani
Sebastiani Vineyards dates back to the late 1800s when stonemason Samuele Sebastiani emigrated from Tuscany. However it was not until 1904 that Sebastiani Winery was founded. After Samuele’s passing in 1944, his son August and wife Sylvia purchased the winery and began the expansion of the facilities as well as the product line of Sebastiani wines. Sylvia and her children Sam, Don and Mary Ann assumed management of the company after August’s passing in 1980. According to our Sebastiani reviews, in 2001 Don left to start his own venture (Don Sebastiani & Sons) while Mary Ann remained at Sebastiani and took control of all operations while spearheading a multi million dollar overhaul of the tasting room and winery. While Sebastiani produces a variety of different styles of wine (Chardonnay, Zinfandel, Merlot, Pinot Noir and more) it is their various Cabernet Sauvignon offerings that typically find their way to the top of our Sebastiani ratings. Today, Sebastiani is a part of Bill Foley's Family Wines and continues to produce single vineyard wines from specific appellations of Sonoma County.

Sebastiani 2009 Cherryblock Cabernet Sauvignon (Sonoma Valley)

The winery has been producing this bottling for many years, and this is possibly the finest ever. It’s soft, but not too soft, ripe, but not too ripe, and exquisitely flavorful, offering tiers of red cherries, cocoa and bacon, enhanced with smoky, sweet new oak. It’s a fine wine to drink with grilled steak.

Sebastiani 1999 Merlot (Sonoma County)

Still dark and young after nearly four years, a big, brooding wine of considerable complexity and interest. Opens with big, lush flavors of blackberries and currants, chocolate, and coffee, very dry and rich in fruity extract. Tannins are thick and intricately detailed. Quite delicious and impressive.

Sebastiani scores bigtime with this lush, opulent Cabernet-based blend. It’s a joy to drink, offering intensely ripe cherry pie, blackberry, blueberry, orange marmalade, cola, mocha and spice flavors. It feels so smooth in the mouth, with a gorgeous balance of natural and oak-inspired tannins. This is really a special wine, but it is for early consumption.

Sebastiani 2001 Merlot (Alexander Valley)

A wine that excites, not only for its deliciously gooey flavors, but for the restraint and subtlety of its structure. Those flavors are rich and extracted, ranging from blackcurrants, fine coffee and the ripest black cherries to the sweet vanillins and toast contributed by oak. The tannins are a wonder, sweet and lush, and the finish grows even sweeter.

Sebastiani 2001 Secolo Sonoma Red Wine Cabernet Sauvignon-Merlot (Sonoma County)

An auspicious start for this new Bordeaux blend from one of Sonoma’s oldest winemaking families. Rich in black currant and cassis flavors, and well-oaked, with a melted chocolate finish. Soft and gentle, this pretty wine is drinking perfectly now.

Sebastiani 2003 Secolo Red Wine (Sonoma County)

Now in its third vintage, this complex Bordeaux blend, which is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon, performs at the height of Sebastiani’s red portfolio. Mainly from great vineyards in Alexander and Sonoma valleys, it’s very much in the modern style, soft and ripe. Yet it maintains an elegant dignity, and it passes the threepeat test: You want a second glass, and then a third.

Sebastiani 2007 Cherryblock Cabernet Sauvignon (Sonoma Valley)

A lovely Cabernet. It comes from the winery’s vineyard in the far southern part of the valley, not far from the Carneros line. The wine is medium-bodied, dry, silky and elegantly tannic, with complex cherry, currant, cola and cedar flavors. Should develop bottle complexity over the next 6–8 years.

Sebastiani 2002 Secolo Red (Sonoma County)

This is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Zinfandel. The Bordeaux varieties make for a balanced claret, rich in black currant flavors. The Zin is way in the background, but seems to add spice and a brambly edge. Oak brings cigar box and cedar complexities. Drink now.
