Sierra Cantabria 2005 Finca El Bosque Tempranillo (Rioja)

  1. $150
Dark as night, and dominated by meaty plum and beef jerky aromas. The palate is huge, with pure fruit, tannin and chocolate pooling at the finish. A new classic in every sense, with stellar balance and complexity. Less than 400 cases made. Imported by Tempranillo, Inc.  — M.S.  (9/1/2007)

Sierra Cantabria 2006 Amancio Tempranillo (Rioja)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $167
Brawny but lovely, with monster black fruit, balsam wood, tobacco and cola nut aromas. The palate is ultra rich and modern in style, with deep, brandied flavors of cola, black cherry and spice. Driven, modern and properly tannic, with a fair amount of mocha and creaminess on the finish. Drink from late 2010 thru 2014.  — M.S.  (2/1/2010)

Sierra Cantabria 2009 Finca El Bosque Tempranillo (Rioja)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $170
El Bosque is Eguren family top-shelf Rioja that’s a knockout. It’s dark as night, with dusty aromas of cola, cocoa, marzipan, blackberry and spice all rolled into a finessed whole. Feels tight as a drum but balanced, with monstrous flavors of boysenberry, cassis, peppercorn, baking spices and chocolate. Young and raring to go; hold until 2013 then drink through 2018.  — M.S.  (4/1/2012)

What a superb combination of new oak, leather, mineral, mocha and berry fruit this wine delivers. It’s a giant, with a ripped palate of upfront boysenberry and then coffee and vanilla in support. All the power, precision and other attributes of modern Rioja are on display. Best in a few more years.  — M.S.  (9/1/2007)

This single-vineyard beauty continues its run of excellence. The ’07 is dense, toasty and powerful, with bacon, vanilla, cigar box and wild berry aromas that set up a strong-boned, fully structured palate overflowing with dark cherry, boysenberry, tobacco and sweet vanilla flavors. Needs time; drink from 2012 through 2022.  — M.S.  (4/1/2011)

Sierra Cantabria 2007 Colección Privada Tempranillo (Rioja)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $52
The Eguren family makes a handful of take-no-prisoners Riojas, and this is probably the best value among them. Earthy and deep; the roasted berry, ham and sweet vanilla aromas lead to a palate that’s the picture of health and balance. The fruit character is outstanding as are nuances of tobacco, chocolate and spice. Drink from 2012–2020.  — M.S.  (4/1/2011)
