Simon Hackett 1998 Anthony's Reserve Shiraz (McLaren Vale)

  1. $38
The fruit aromas are pretty: plums and black cherries. Add fine oak aromas of smoke, cocoa, vanilla, toast and menthol, and this has all the ingredients to please. The acidity is firm, preventing the wine from ever seeming flabby or over the top and giving strength to the long spicy finish.  — W.E.  (6/1/2001)

Simon Hackett 1997 Foggo Road Cabernet Sauvignon (McLaren Vale)

  1. $38
Loaded with ripe dark fruit, this expansive wine carries a lot of oak but wears it comfortably. Jammy blackberries are graced with leather and chocolate. The mouthfeel is plush and so rich it verges on syrupy. Finishes long, with enough soft tannins to taste good now yet age for another 5–10 years.  — W.E.  (6/1/2001)

Simon Hackett 1999 Chardonnay (Barossa Valley)

  • Best Buy
  1. $15
Ripe and pungent, this opens with a blast of oak-influenced melon and peach aromas, mixed with smoke, spices, and buttered toast. It’s very rich and forward in the mouth, with tropical fruit flavors, some sweetness, and a thick, custardy texture. Of interest are the acids, which are very high and penetrating. Best Buy.  — S.H.  (6/1/2001)

Simon Hackett 2005 Old Vine Grenache (McLaren Vale)

  • Best Buy
  1. $15
A top-notch offering for current consumption, this wine boasts a complex bouquet of black cherries, cinnamon, clove, coffee, vanilla, herbal notes and hints of green peppercorns—it’s a wine you can sit and sniff almost endlessly. The flavors are more straightforward—black cherry and spice—while the texture is delicate, almost soft. Drink now.  — J.C.  (6/1/2007)

Simon Hackett 1999 Cabernet Sauvignon (McLaren Vale)

  1. $18
The aromas alone are worth the price: black currants and plums, smoke and anise, vanilla and cocoa, and something herbaceous, like tapenade. There are also leathery nuances that give it an almost gamy character. Some mint flavors on the finish, with firm tannins that should allow this wine to age well.  — W.E.  (6/1/2001)

Simon Hackett 2000 Brightview Sémillon (Barossa Valley)

  • Best Buy
  1. $15
Brightly fruity on the nose, with notes of lemon, anise or pine, and pear nectar. It’s weighty on the palate—thick and almost syrupy—yet the flavors are lemon and beeswax. The long finish is tart and very resinous. This distinctive style of wine may not be for everyone.  — J.C.  (2/1/2002)

Simon Hackett 2006 Old Vine Grenache (McLaren Vale)

A fresh and fruity Grenache, seemingly designed with summer grilling in mind. It’s full, round and lush, a bomb of black cherries and chocolate that finishes with supple tannins. Drink now.  — J.C.  (8/1/2009)

Simon Hackett 2000 Cabernet Sauvignon (McLaren Vale)

  1. $18
Simple aromas of fresh fruit and oak do nothing to turn you away from this brambly, spicy Cabernet. Solid berry fruit flows across the palate, with super spicy oak forming the basis of the persistent finish, which gives off ample vanilla as well. More open than tight. Drink sooner than later.  — M.S.  (12/15/2002)
