Slanghoek NV Vin Doux Sparkling (South Africa)

  1. $14
This wine boasts elements of pale hay, distinct lychee and candied grapefruit, with a grassy edge. There is a slight flinty, metallic note towards the finish. Although well made, the dosage stands out against the low acidity, and the mouthfeel is on the fierce side.  — K.F.  (12/1/2003)

Slanghoek 2002 Private Reserve Sauvignon Blanc (South Africa)

Slanghoek 2001 Private Reserve Pinotage (South Africa)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $13
A good example of the modern Pinotage style, in which the grape's sometimes challenging game and metallic qualities are well tamed. The attractive nose offers tart berry jam. smoke and tar, while the drily fruited palate shows good, brisk acidity. A touch puckery on the close, but tasty overall.  — M.M.  (3/1/2004)

Slanghoek 2000 Private Reserve Shiraz (South Africa)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $14
Decent Shiraz fruit here is regrettably obscured by a heavy toasty oak overlay. With less wood, this might really shine. Typical dark berry, sour herb, and leather flavors play on a mid-weight frame. The feel is tangy, while the finish shows spice, cocoa and Rhônish metallic hints.  — M.M.  (3/1/2004)
