Sobon Estate 2007 Zinfandel (Fiddletown)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $22
A thoroughly enjoyable Zinfandel that shows the variety’s lusty character, but with special grace and finesse. Bone dry and richly tannic, it has complex flavors of blackberries, blueberries and currants, with earthier notes of tobacco, leather and unsweetened dark chocolate. Very fine.  — S.H.  (5/1/2010)

Shows why this part of the Foothills has achieved such a stellar reputation for Zin. It’s a big wine, packed with sweet cherry, black raspberry, pepper and smoky vanilla flavors, but drinks balanced and gentle.  — S.H.  (11/15/2004)

Lovely mountain Zin, showing a briary, brambly quality to intensely flavored wild blackberries, blueberries and cherry liqueur. There also are tiers of peppery spices, licorice, chocolate mint and soy. Polished and dry, this fine, complex Zinfandel is drinking well now.  — S.H.  (10/1/2007)

Sobon Estate 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon (Amador County)

  1. $15
There’s beautiful blackberry and cassis fruit in this Cab, undergirded by a rich, coffee-infused earthiness. It’s completely dry and the tannins are fairly fierce, but nothing a good steak can’t negotiate. In fact, it’s a great food wine, classy and understated. The best Sobon Cab ever and a great value.  — S.H.  (10/1/2006)
