Soléna 2007 Hyland Vineyard Pinot Noir (Eola-Amity Hills)

  • Editors' Choice
  • Online Exclusive
  1. $45
Laurent and Danielle Montalieu acquired this high-profile vineyard in 2007; this is the first Hyland release under their Soléna label. It’s a beautiful Pinot, with the elegance of Burgundy and the freshness of New World grapes. Fermentation in rotary barrels (for color extraction and tannin management) yields a silky, perfumed, feminine wine that penetrates subtly…  — P.G.  (6/1/2010)

Soléna 2009 Guadalupe Vineyard Pinot Noir (Yamhill-Carlton District)

  1. $40
There is a delicious, citrusy kick to this wine, lifting the bright berry fruit flavors. The flavors pile on, with peppery spice and chocolate, and a complex midpalate that tastes like cherry cola.  — P.G.  (6/1/2012)

Soléna 2005 Domaine Danielle Laurent Pinot Noir (Yamhill-Carlton District)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $45
The top cuvée of Soléna Cellars has tangy blackberry and black cherry flavors, wrapped in lightly noted hints of earth, leaf and bark. It’s just short of luxurious, but the resonant mid-palate extends into a finish dappled with cinnamon, smoke and toasted walnuts. Elegant and refined, this should age nicely for up to a decade.  — P.G.  (7/1/2008)

Soléna 2004 Pinot Gris (Oregon)

  1. $20
A cut above the competition, this hits on all cylinders. Plenty of texture, rich, round mouthfeel, and nicely ripened but not over-the-top pear and stone fruits. There’s a hit of cinnamon spice in the finish, and the flavors seem to resonate through a long and satisfying finish.  — P.G.  (2/1/2006)

Soléna 2009 Hyland Vineyard Pinot Noir (McMinnville)

  1. $55
Full-bodied and aromatic, this richly scented wine beguiles with a mix of brambly fruit and cola highlights. Firm, ripe tannins suggest a sturdy wine ready for the cellar, which nonetheless lets the fruit shine through the peppery finish.  — P.G.  (8/1/2011)

Soléna 2008 Pinot Gris (Oregon)

  1. $20
As classy a bottle as you might expect from veteran winemaker Laurent Montalieu. Once again the fruit is crystal clear, setting up fresh pear, green apple and pink grapefruit flavors against crisp, juicy acidity. The finish is lively and spicy.  — P.G.  (6/1/2010)

Soléna 2008 Domaine Danielle Laurent Pinot Noir (Yamhill-Carlton District)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $50
There’s an odd plastic note here. Firm and compact, with unyielding fruit; black cherry, leaf and black tea flavors dominate. This seems closed down even after being open for several hours.  — P.G.  (3/1/2011)

Soléna 2009 Willakia Vineyard Pinot Noir (Eola-Amity Hills)

  1. $40
Planted in 1998, this vineyard is relatively new to Soléna’s lineup. Plenty of toast and Bourbon-barrel scents lift the open, with a hint of sharpness from the alcohol. Though only a quarter of the barrels were new, the spice and coffee accents are in full display, wrapped around tart red fruits. An earthy bottom, hinting at forest and mushroom, completes the experience.  — P.G.  (6/1/2012)
