Spelletich Cellars 2001 Tim & Edies Vineyard Zinfandel (Shenandoah Valley (CA))

  1. $23
Smoky rich and smooth up front, with a fine array of layered fruit: Black cherry, plum, chocolate, coffee, cinnamon, smoke and a hint of tar come to mind. The fine tannins give good support; the finish is long and elegant.  — W.E.  (11/1/2003)

Spelletich Cellars 1998 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

  1. $80
They must have let the grapes get as ripe as possible, and then macerated the crushed fruit for a long time, as this wine explodes with berry flavors. There’s also a good amount of smoky and spicy oak accents. It’s a balanced, harmonious Cabernet.  — S.H.  (8/1/2001)

Spelletich Cellars 1999 Spotted Owl Chardonnay (Mount Veeder)

  1. $25
From mountain vineyards, the peach fruit is wrapped in a tight, steely wine, with a firm tannic backbone. There are also complex crushed spices and the sweet vanilla of oak. A wine of great structure, it’s also rich and delicious.  — W.E.  (8/1/2001)

Spelletich Cellars 2000 Ochoa Chardonnay (Carneros)

  1. $29
Much lighter and brighter that the Rustridge bottling, with pure, focused aromas of tropical fruits, limes and ripe peaches. In the mouth, it shines with crisp acidity and deep flavors, accented by oak and lees. This is a first-rate Chard and very typical of its region.  — S.H.  (12/15/2002)

Spelletich Cellars 2006 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

  1. $55
Feels heavy and soft, and tastes rather sweet and extracted in jammy blackberry, cherry and chocolate flavors. Yet the tannins are smooth and refined. There’s some possibility the wine may age beyond its current doldrums into something better.  — S.H.  (9/1/2011)

Spelletich Cellars 1998 Bodog Red (Napa Valley)

  1. $25
A big, dark wine, with deep flavors of red and black stone fruits, and wild blackberries. Despite the size, it’s a simple wine, easy to understand—it’s a ribs-and-barbecued-chicken wine. A Bordeaux-style blend, but with 36% Howell Mountain Zinfandel.  — W.E.  (8/1/2001)

Spelletich Cellars 1999 Heroncroft Vineyard-Keefur Ranch Chardonnay (Russian River Valley)

  1. $29
Quite different from Spelletich’s Spotted Owl release, this wine has spiced green-apple aromas. While it’s as rich in flavor as the other offering, the acidity is lower, so the wine seems softer and creamier.  — W.E.  (8/1/2001)

Spelletich Cellars 2000 Rustridge Chardonnay (Napa Valley)

  1. $24
From Chiles Valley, this wine has vivacious tropical fruit, peach and pear flavors, but seems a little heavy in the mouth, with dull acids. Oak provides creamy spice and vanilla, and it finishes with earthy heat.  — S.H.  (12/15/2002)
