Spring Mountain Vineyard 2007 Elivette Red (Spring Mountain)

  1. $125
This blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc shows all the charms of the 2007 vintage. It’s an opulent, delicious wine, immediately likeable now for its broad array of blackberry, cherry, raspberry, mocha, cassis and new oak flavors. The tannins are soft, but strong enough to protect this wine for the next six years at the very least.  — S.H.  (6/1/2012)

Spring Mountain Vineyard 2004 Estate Syrah (Napa Valley)

  1. $50
This is serious Syrah. It shows mountain intensity, with potent cassis, licorice, grilled meat, cocoa and gingersnap cookie flavors, enhanced by all the loveliness that fine new oak contributes to a full-bodied red wine. The tannins are strong and thick, but of the sweetly ripe type. Just lovely. Drink now and for the next few years.  — S.H.  (9/1/2007)

Spring Mountain Vineyard 2005 Elivette Red (Spring Mountain)

  • Cellar Selection
  • Online Exclusive
  1. $100
An impressive young Bordeaux blend, mainly Cabernet Sauvignon, that shows impeccably ripe, clean fruit but also the hard tannins of its famous mountain. Thoroughly dry, its astringency cannot mask an eruption of blackberries and black currants, accented by smoky oak. Give this lovely wine a good five years to begin to mature.  — S.H.  (4/1/2010)

Spring Mountain Vineyard 2004 Elivette Red (Napa Valley)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $100
Mainly Cabernet Sauvignon, grown in the winery’s estate vineyard, this is an immaturely tough, hard wine, even at the age of 4-plus years. The rugged mountain tannins are drily intrusive, but the vast core of black currants strongly suggests aging. Already throwing some sediment, it should be better after 2009 and beyond.  — S.H.  (6/1/2009)

Spring Mountain Vineyard 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $55
Lots of folks will pop the cork on this Cab before its time, but that would be a shame. Hugely tannic, in the way of Spring Mountain, it has a deep, ripe core of black currants, violets, dark baker’s chocolate and vanilla oak, wrapped into an impressively firm structure. Will really find its stride after 2012.  — S.H.  (5/1/2008)

Spring Mountain Vineyard 2001 Red (Napa Valley)

  1. $50
This is a big, lushly textured wine that has the intensity of mountain fruit without the hard tannins. Blackberry and vanilla coat the palate, followed by lingering notes of plum, cassis and sweet oak.  — W.E.  (6/6/2005)

Spring Mountain Vineyard 2007 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon (Spring Mountain)

  1. $75
Rich and vibrant in acids and tannins, this Cabernet feels like it was obviously grown in a good place. It flatters the palate with blackberry and black cherry flavors, with a currant ripeness accentuated by 80% new French oak. Forward and elaborate now, it doesn’t seem like an ager despite the tannins, so drink now–2013.  — S.H.  (7/1/2011)

Spring Mountain Vineyard 2002 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon (Spring Mountain)

  1. $50
The mountain plays its part in the intense tannins and concentrated fruit. You could drink it now against rich fare, but it’s also a cellar candidate. It’s a tough, dry, masculine wine, with heady currant and blackberry flavors and a lot of new French oak. Drink now and for the next 15 years.  — S.H.  (12/31/2005)
