St. Supéry 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon (Rutherford)

  1. $85
This rich wine is a great success. It’s enormously rich, almost flamboyant in blackberry jam, blueberry cobbler, anise and smoky new oak, as delicious as any Cabernet out there. Yet it shows a fine structure and relatively modest alcohol, a feature of the 2008 vintage. Good as it is now, you can safely cellar it for the rest of this decade and watch it evolve.  — S.H.  (6/1/2012)

St. Supéry 2005 Dollarhide Limited Edition Estate Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

  1. $80
This is an extraordinarily fine Cabernet Sauvignon, easily St. Supéry’s best in memory. It’s made in a completely different style from the prevailing cult model, being fully dry, lower in alcohol, and maintaining a tannic structure framing blackberry and currant flavors that are notably balanced with herbs and tobacco. Will get better and better. Call it…  — S.H.  (11/1/2009)

St. Supéry 2002 Elu Red Wine (Napa Valley)

  1. $69
Elu is St. Supery’s Napa Valley Bordeaux blend. Largely Cabernet Sauvignon, with a little Merlot and Petit Verdot, it is really a gorgeous wine. Hard to describe how smooth and rich it feels in the mouth. There’s lots of dusty tannins, rich blackberry essence, cherry fruit and chocolate flavor, and sweet toasty oak. The wine is beautiful now, but it should glide…  — S.H.  (3/1/2007)

St. Supéry 2007 Dollarhide Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

  1. $85
A bit on the hot side, reflecting the extra warmth that the Pope Valley region of eastern Napa Valley gets during the summer. Made from 100% Cabernet, it’s massively flavored, huge in jammy blackberries, cherries, cassis and dark chocolate. The tannins are considerable, the finish long and ripe. Best to open this wine by 2015 or so.  — S.H.  (6/1/2012)

St. Supéry 2001 Élu Red (Napa Valley)

  1. $60
From a producer that thoroughly understands Napa Bordeaux wines comes this classically proportioned blend, which is dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon. It impresses by its balance, elegance and richness. The blackberry and cherry flavors are enriched with oak, leading to a long and satisfying finish. Drink now through 2010.  — S.H.  (3/1/2006)

St. Supéry 2004 Merlot (Rutherford)

  1. $40
The talent at St. Supéry is evident in this lush, balanced Merlot. It has the famously ripe, forward fruit of a great Napa red, but shows the balance, harmony and complexity you expect when you fork over forty bucks. Smooth and polished, this low-production red is gorgeous now, and should hold and soften for another eight years. Available exclusively from the winery.  — S.H.  (5/1/2007)

St. Supéry 2004 Virtú White (Napa Valley)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $25
Here’s a fancy wine. It’s made with full-blown Burgundian techniques, including barrel fermentation and sur lies aging. Every care was taken to preserve the fruity freshness. The peach, apricot, pineapple and honeysuckle flavors have a rich edge of smoky oak and vanilla, offset by fine acidity, and the finish is very dry. This is one of the best Sauvignon-Sémillon…  — S.H.  (3/1/2006)

St. Supéry 1997 Dollarhide Ranch Limited Editi Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

  1. $70
Blackberry aromas have a Port-like character and a smoky undertone. Big extraction leaves a thick, weighty mouthfeel and the essence of Cabernet’s sweetness. Some mineral, coffee and meat on the lengthy finish. A good mix of finesse and wildness.  — W.E.  (11/1/2000)
