Stephen's 2006 Estate Vineyard Pinot Noir (York Mountain)

  1. $48
Marked by crisp acidity and very ripe flavors of cherry pie filling, red currants, cocoa and cola, with a grilled smokiness throughout. Elegant and silky, if a bit direct. Give it a year or two to mellow.  — S.H.  (12/31/2009)

Stephen's 2005 Encell Vineyard Pinot Noir (San Luis Obispo County)

  1. $30
Dark, soft and rich, this single-vineyard Pinot brims with deep, almost brooding flavors of red currants, cherries, red plums, mocha and dusty spices. It also has an edge of tannins that will help it negotiate a good steak. Drink over the next several years.  — S.H.  (7/1/2008)

Stephen's 2006 Stromsoe Vineyard Pinot Noir (San Luis Obispo County)

  1. $30
Made in a lighter style, this silky Pinot Noir has crisp acidity accentuating flavors of cherries, red licorice and cola. It’s an elegant wine for drinking now.  — S.H.  (12/31/2009)

Stephen's 2006 Stromsoe Vineyard Pinot Grigio (San Luis Obispo County)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $14
This is an interesting interpretation of PG. On the plus side is its very low (12.5%) alcohol, making it light-bodied and easy to drink. There’s a little sweetness, not too much, that gives a honeyed taste to the lime, grapefruit, fig, green apple and spice flavors. You’ll also find a crisp, minerally finish to this refreshing, food-friendly wine.  — S.H.  (7/1/2008)

Stephen's 2005 MacBride Vineyard Chardonnay (York Mountain)

  1. $28
Here’s a minerally, acidic, very dry Chard with a firm structure. Slightly earthy, it has citrus fruit, smoky oak and spice flavors, with a wet stone, metallic tang in the finish.  — S.H.  (9/1/2007)

Stephen's 2003 William Cain Vineyard Pinot Noir (San Luis Obispo County)

  1. $18
Although it’s less pricey than the winery’s Encell Pinot, I slightly prefer this one for its accessibility. It’s a tart, silky wine, with coffee, cherry and spice flavors, and a real drink-me quality, but it is acidic. Drink it with rich fare, such as duck, salmon and even pork dishes.  — S.H.  (5/1/2006)

Stephen's 2004 MacBride Vineyard Chardonnay (York Mountain)

  1. $24
Earthy and minerally, and very dry, this Chard has a scour of high acidity. It's a lean wine, by the usual fruity standards, but a clean, complex one, rather Chablisian in its way, and might improve with some time in the cellar.  — S.H.  (5/1/2006)

Stephen's 2003 Encell Vineyard Pinot Noir (San Luis Obispo County)

  1. $24
Showcases its terroir in the brisk acidity and light but complex body that wraps bitter cherry and coffee flavors. Bone dry, the wine will be a fine accompaniment to salmon or duck, simply prepared.  — S.H.  (5/1/2006)
