Stolpman 2007 La Croce Red (Santa Ynez Valley)

  • Editors' Choice
  • Online Exclusive
  1. $66
This is the costliest of Stolpman’s new reds and easily the best. It impresses for the depth of flavor and classic, dense structure. A co-fermented blend of Sangiovese and Syrah, it shows imposingly complex layers of dark stone fruits and berries, dark chocolate, bacon, dusty Indian spices and sweet, smoky sandalwood, wrapped into powerfully rich but gently ground…  — S.H.  (4/1/2010)

Stolpman 2007 L'Avion Roussanne-Viognier (Santa Ynez Valley)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $38
This is quite a brilliant wine. An unusual blend of 90% Roussanne and 10% Viognier, it shows tremendous richness in the array of tangerine, Meyer lemon custard, pineapple tart, buttered toast and caramel cream flavors, yet has a stony minerality that anchors and dries it. Fermented in new oak and aged on the lees, this full-bodied, complex wine can be consumed by…  — S.H.  (4/1/2010)

Stolpman 2001 Angeli Sangiovese (Santa Ynez Valley)

  1. $42
An offbeat Super-Tuscan style wine (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sangiovese) with lots of interesting things going on. It’s very dry, with tannins that are pronounced, but not difficult to negotiate. The complex flavors span the gamut from blackberries and cherries to dried fine herbs, rich tobacco, and mocha. A firm spine of acidity suggests midterm ageability.  — S.H.  (10/1/2003)

Stolpman 2001 La Croce Red (Santa Ynez Valley)

  1. $19
This Syrah-Sangiovese blend, the only one from the appellation I know of, is an interesting and imaginative wine. It starts with blackberry, mocha, pepper, smoke and animal aromas and an intriguing suggestion of wild herbs, and the flavors are similar, with cherries and blackberries taking center stage. The wine is very dry, and its tannins are a wonder. Feels soft…  — S.H.  (10/1/2003)

A rich, dramatic and impressive wine. With vital acidity and dryness, it has complex layers of ripe cherries, red licorice, cranberries, pomegranates, mocha and cinnamon. Falls somewhere in texture between Pinot Noir and Merlot, either of which it can substitute for. Drink now.  — S.H.  (3/1/2011)

Stolpman 2003 Hilltops Syrah (Santa Ynez Valley)

  1. $35
Favorable comments across the board for this Syrah, with reviewers lauding its ripe, fruit-sweet berry aromas and flavors, and its creamy mouthfeel. Bold, peppery aromas, and a long, lush finish complete a fine package.  — W.E.  (9/1/2005)

Stolpman 2008 Originals Syrah (Santa Ynez Valley)

  1. $38
A rich, extracted Syrah that treads the line between simple lusciousness and complex authority. It’s softly tannic and low in acidity, with pie filling flavors of cherries, raspberries and mocha. Earns extra points for sheer richness. Drink now.  — S.H.  (3/1/2011)

Stolpman 2008 Ruben's Block Syrah (Santa Ynez Valley)

  1. $98
Extraordinarily rich, offering massive blackberry and cherry jam, red currant, licorice, balsam, bitter chocolate and red pepper flavors. It’s very tannic, but seems overly soft, and probably best now, so drink up.  — S.H.  (3/1/2011)
