StoneCap 2010 Estate Grown Riesling (Columbia Valley (WA))

Riesling is the star of an excellent lineup of Best Buys from StoneCap. Estate-grown, fragrant and complex, it sends up aromas of lemon oil, orange peel, fresh-brewed tea, pastry and powdered sugar. Mildly sweet, fruity and delicate, it surprises with exceptional length. A very fine effort from new StoneCap winemaker Kendall Mix.

A delicious bottle, that starts with first-rate, estate-grown fruitó80% Merlot, 15% Syrah, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Lots of pretty cherry fruit, wrapped in smooth, chocolaty tannins.

Very young, this is a fine follow-up to the winery’s outstanding 2009. Dark and rich, the estate-grown fruit offers far more flavor than almost any domestic Merlot in this price range. Blackberries, black cherry, smoke and espresso lead into a grainy, chocolaty, tannic finish.

Stonecap 2005 Chardonnay (Columbia Valley (WA))

This is a pleasant, everyday sort of Chard, with broad fruit flavors suggesting melon, banana and light tropical. There’s a substantial wash of vanilla cream, despite the stainless-steel aging, and the wine ebbs gracefully through a smooth, creamy finish.
