Stonegate 2003 Spaulding Vineyard Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon (Diamond Mountain)

  1. $50
One of the more dependable bottlings from Napa, the ’03 is a lovely wine. Rich and balanced, it offers intense cassis, cherry-pie filling and coffee flavors, with a delicious overlay of new oak. The mountain tannins are firm and dusty, but very finely structured, ripe and sweet. Beautiful now, and should develop well for the next eight years or so.  — S.H.  (8/1/2007)

Stonegate 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

  1. $25
Somehow, this fine winery gets left off a lot of “best of” lists, which makes it a great value, especially from a super vintage like ‘97. This is serious Napa Cabernet, filled with fancy black currant, cassis and mocha, and complex with toasty oak. It’s very dry and elegant, one of those wines that fills the palate with the most sumptuous flavors and textures. It’s…  — S.H.  (2/1/2001)

Stonegate 2001 Diamond Mountain Reserve Spaulding Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $50
It’s extraordinarily, mouth-numbingly tannic, and acidic, too, but even that can’t stop the cascade of blackberries and black currants from throttling the mouth. This is an ageable wine, well able to stand and improve beyond 2010.  — S.H.  (8/1/2005)

Stonegate 1999 Merlot (Napa Valley)

  1. $28
Loveliness in a glass, this finely etched Merlot benefits from the vintage's richness and great vineyards. The aromas are a delight, brimming with blackberry, cassis, mocha and smoke, and leading to deep, satisfying flavors and a velvety texture. Classy and delicious, and sturdy tannins suggest midterm ageability.  — S.H.  (12/1/2001)

Stonegate 1999 Diamond Mountain Reserve, Spaulding Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Diamond Mountain)

  1. $60
Rich and well-oaked, this is a fine exemple of Napa Valley Cab. Well-ripened cassis flavors lead the way, but the mountain grapes have yielded a tight, somewhat tannic wine that will reward extended cellaring. —S.H.  — S.H.  (2/1/2003)

Stonegate 1999 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

  1. $40
Almost black and Smells youthful, with cassis and oak aromas. Then you taste. The first impression is tannins. They’re thick and firm and will take years to melt. But the core of blackberry fruit suggests the wait will be worth it. It’s also nice to taste a Napa Cabernet that actually has tannins these days.  — S.H.  (6/1/2002)

Stonegate 2010 Chardonnay (Napa Valley)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $25
Good price for a Napa Chardonnay this rich and balanced. It’s enormously ripe in pineapples, oranges and golden mangoes, but grounded by zesty acidity and a minerality that comes from the soil.  — S.H.  (5/1/2012)

Stonegate 1998 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

  1. $29
Light on fruit, with blackberry and cassis flavors that are a bit thin in the middle, this wine is nonetheless distinguished. You have those beautiful Napa tannins, acidity and structure, and fine toasty oak; even though it’s not a blockbuster, the finish is full of sweet, limpid fruit.  — S.H.  (12/1/2001)
