Summers 2007 Checkmate Red (Napa Valley)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $100
This Cabernet Sauvignon-based blend is a best-of-barrels selection from Summers’ various Cabs throughout Napa Valley. It’s unquestionably a big wine, densely packed with blackberry, cherry and dark chocolate flavors. It’s also very young. The tannins pack a real punch. New oak, to the tune of 100%, is apparent in the buttered toast richness. Don’t drink it now…  — S.H.  (4/1/2012)

Summers 2008 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon (Calistoga)

  1. $59
A gorgeous Cabernet, among the best Summers has ever released. Actually, their Reserve Cab tends to fly under the radar, and is a good buy for that reason, although they did raise the price considerably with this ’08 bottling. The wine, which is 100% Cabernet, is showing beautifully now, with soft, rich tannins and luscious flavors of blackberries, black currants…  — S.H.  (4/1/2012)

Summers 2006 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

  1. $56
Very fine and high-toned, a Cabernet that shows real class and pedigree. Entirely drinkable now for its soft, lush tannins and elaborately detailed blackberry, black cherry, anise, carob and cedar flavors that last long through a spicy finish. Should age well through 2015.  — S.H.  (6/1/2010)

Summers 2007 Petite Sirah (Napa Valley)

  1. $28
When Petite Sirah is at its best, and this one is, it offers incomparable structure and flavors. Nothing quite like it anywhere, with its inky dark color, big, thick tannins and ripe, exuberant flavors of berries, currants, mocha, leather, tobacco, cedar and peppery spices. What’s especially nice about this bottling is the dryness and moderate alcohol. A superior…  — S.H.  (6/1/2010)

A lush, opulent Cabernet for drinking now. Shows classic Napa structure, with firm, fine tannins housing ripe flavors of blackberries, currants, cassis and herbs, touched by smoky oak.  — S.H.  (10/1/2011)

Summers 2000 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $38
You could blind-taste this and know it’s a fancy Napa Cab from the lush tannins. Any ripe wine can hit the blackcurrant, plum and cherry notes, but few can achieve this level of smoothness. Coats the palate like a single-malt Scotch, with luxury and smoothness that carry into the long finish. Delectable now.  — S.H.  (11/15/2003)

Summers 2006 Checkmate Red (Napa Valley)

  1. $100
Held back for four-plus years before release, this Bordeaux blend has become softly gentle and approachable. It’s rich in cherry, raspberry and cassis flavors, with a gorgeous, plump coating of sweet, toasted oak. Drink over the next five years.  — S.H.  (4/1/2011)

Summers 2004 Villa Andriana Vineyard Zinfandel (Napa Valley)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $34
Classic Napa Zin, dry, rich, balanced and almost with the finesse of a great Cab. It’s the tannins that turn the trick. They’re so ripe, sweet and fine. Of course, the flavors are totally Zin, all briary berries and peppery spice. Just delicious.  — S.H.  (11/1/2006)
