Summers has established a good track record with this single-vineyard Zin, and while it’s not quite in the same league as the ’01 or ’02, it’s very good. Ripe and striking in cherry and tobacco flavors, and liberally spiced, it has a fine, claret-like balance.

Charbono makes a rustic, but long-lived, wine in California. Few specialize in it, but Summers does. The ’05 is a big, black, inky wine, as tannic as Petite Sirah but earthier and softer. The flavors are of carob, blackberries and coffee. Totally dry.
