Summit Lake 1999 Zinfandel (Howell Mountain)

  1. $22
Marvelously rich and dense, with well-ripened fruit and sweet, dessert-like flavors suggesting cherry liqueur-filled chocolate candies. But it drinks dry and dustily tannic, a balanced, although heady, wine of great style. —S.H.  — S.H.  (9/1/2002)

  1. $45
A fine vintage Port-style wine, rich in chocolate-infused cassis flavors. Feels softly plush and velvety, and is very sweet. Nice way to end a meal with a chocolate dessert.  — S.H.  (6/1/2009)

Summit Lake 2003 Emily Kestrel Cabernet Sauvignon (Howell Mountain)

  1. $50
This Cab is well over five years old, but it’s still young, and has that taste of primary fruits that marks an immature wine. Freshly crushed blackberries and cherries, with accents of cassis, wash over the palate, wrapped into firm, but fine, mountain tannins. Seems like it needs more aging, and maybe a lot of it. Try 2010–2018.  — S.H.  (6/1/2009)

Summit Lake 2000 Emily Kestrel Cabernet Sauvignon (Howell Mountain)

  1. $40
Flamboyant in cherries, currants and sweet garden herbs, this wine’s tannins are ample, but intricate and soft. Turns a bit thin in the mid-palate, and then reprises the cherries on the finish.  — S.H.  (5/1/2005)

Summit Lake 1996 Howell Mountain Zinfandel (Napa Valley)

  1. $23
Good grapey, cherry-flavored fruit. The fleshy middle gives way to a hot, briary finish.  — P.G.  (11/15/1999)

Summit Lake 2000 Zinfandel (Howell Mountain)

  1. $20
A lean-styled wine, with powdery tannins framing a bright-edged collection of sour cherry, anise, smoke and toast. An herbal core runs through it, giving it a bright finish.  — J.M.  (10/1/2004)
