Suncé Vineyard & Winery 2000 Merlot (Monterey)
Price
$18
Unusually concentrated and intense for a Monterey Merlot; a big, rich wine that assaults the palate with flavors of blackcurrant, plum, chocolate, dried herbs and smoked oak. The tannins are as smooth and plush as anything up north. Would score higher if not for a certain thinness in the middle palate, but that’s a result of the vintage.

Suncé Vineyard & Winery 2010 Capp Vineyard Malvasia Bianca (Suisun Valley)
Price
$20
Briny, rich and layered, this is an interesting white from a Russian River Valley-based producer who is sourcing Malvasia Bianca in this case from a vineyard in the Suisun Valley, inland and east of the Napa Valley on the way to Sacramento. Dry and crisp, the typically Greek varietal in this version has hints of honey and nuts and dried fruit. Drink it young.

Suncé Vineyard & Winery 2007 Meritage Quintessential (North Coast)
Price
$48
This blend of all five Bordeaux varieties has cranberry, plum, sage and herb throughout and is good, with a medium-body and tart finish. Aged almost two years in nearly all new French oak it’s fairly light on its feet. Much of the blend (27%) is Alexander Valley Cabernet, the Merlot is from Sonoma Valley and the Cab Franc from Dry Creek. The Malbec and Petit Verdot…

Suncé Vineyard & Winery 2008 Clone 337 Mazzocco-Bevill Cabernet Sauvignon (Alexander Valley)
Price
$50
This is a soft, sweet, almost Porty wine, with raisin, chocolate and blackberry flavors. It has a long, spicy finish, and is best now with lusty stews and barbecue.

Suncé Vineyard & Winery 2001 Pl. Franicevic Stryker’s Vineyard Meritage Cabernet Sauvignon (Clear Lake)
Price
$40
A nice, well-crafted Cab that pleases on several levels. It’s got good varietal character, from the blackberry and currant flavors accented with oak to the soft, sweet tannins. The wine needs more depth and concentration, though, and finishes thin.

Suncé Vineyard & Winery 2007 Clone 337 Bevill-Mazzocco Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Alexander Valley)
Price
$50
Soft and rather one-dimensional, this Cabernet shows ripe cherry, raspberry, blackberry and oak flavors. It’s bone dry, showing herbal, astringent tannins. Could develop interestingly in the bottle over the next 6–8 years.

Suncé Vineyard & Winery 2001 La Rochelle Vineyard Pinot Noir (Monterey)
Price
$18
Good example of cool Central Coast Pinot, with its polished, jammy flavors of cherry and raspberry and dusty spices, complexed with smoky oak. Bright acidity and gentle tannins make for an easy drink. Light, but a pretty good value.

Suncé Vineyard & Winery 2008 Winemaker's Reserve Meritage (Sonoma County)
Price
$48
Rich and forward in blackberry, cherry and currant flavors, with an overripe note that veers into raisins, this Cabernet Sauvignon-based blend is dry and tannic. It’s ready to drink now.
